  • Most issues reported these days stem from users not enabling their emulators to use the required amount of RAM.
We also tend not to use the search feature but post our issues within the texture pack release page.
Failure to load a texture pack should not be posted in the release thread unless you have already patched the emulator.

If you don't have the resources to use Large/HD texture packs please do not attempt to do so.
Users should have a minimum amount of System RAM not less then 4GB's.
If you have less then 4GB's of RAM do not post about how your emulator crashes,
RAM is dirt cheap so invest some money into your PC.

I would like to say thanks to squall_leonhart

Zeckron what i don't like about that stone wall is that you can tell that it tiles the pattern is clearly visible which i think may be because of the big rocks in the texture but I'm not sure.

Death-Droid you make a good point here. I see what you're talking about, and it's b/c the rocks are not of a uniform size and shape. If they were all uniform, like a brick wall for instance, it wouldn't be noticeable.

Hmmm.... Looks like I may need to scrap it and try something more uniform. That sucks, but if it doesn't look right then it just doesn't look right!

I'll revisit the wall later after I've had time to think about it. For now I'll try some of the framing.

Of course, more work. My main concern was finding the direction to head in--if Railroads wants to pick back up, I'm more than happy to pass the torch back to him.

I totally agree with Zeckron about the elegance of TP Hylian... OOT Hylian was great for its concept, but it was definitely designed with low-resolution in mind--block letters can be pulled off better than curves when looking at individual pixels.

Here's the breakdown as I see it on language (yes, I'm getting in depth with this, it was actually part of a college paper I wrote on fictitious linguistics):
--OOT Hylian is what was used in the original game. It can be reused (there is a font available which replicates the individual characters), or even enhanced (keep the character structure, but add details like serifs or curves). Problem is that it's based on the Japanese Katakana syllable structure, which makes it less "fun" for us English-speaking folks.
--WW Hylian is a sort of "middle ground" between OOT and TP Hylian. Again, it is based on the Katakana structure, but the symbols are much more natural looking. There is a font which replicates the individual characters of this font as well.
--TP Hylian is almost revolutionary, in that it ditches the Katakana structure, and uses an English transliteration system--each character of Hylian translates to exactly one English character, making it very easy to decipher words and phrases, provided you are familiar with the characters (for example, from Zeckron's screenshot above, the poster on the left starts with "Zeckron was here"). Again, a font is available for this structure.

I lean toward TP because, like Zeckron, I like Easter eggs, and I like being able to read the signs and whatnot.

@Zeckron--we've got to get you Photoshop and a computer that can run it...

Edit: Why don't you upload the texture, maybe I can fix it... I'd hate to see you scrap such a good texture.

Chieftain, again thanks for all the additional info. Alas, I've never been a fan of language arts but it's obvious that you are. Thanks for sharing your wealth of information on the subject!

In regards to the poster easter-egg, not to worry; it's nothing nafarious, though I could understand some caution in this regard (because you just never know). Here's the gist:

"Zeckron was here.
Zelda OOT Community Retexture project.
If you're enjoying these textures please support the cause by submitting your own high quality retextures to the community"

In regards to your point about Photoshop and a new PC, well I'm in total agreement. PS may be making it's way towards me this week if things turn out as planned (and the wife doesn't check my CC statement). So there's hope for me yet :)

Stay tuned for an upload of the texture. And thanks for all your help!

I rather like the wood... I'm not sure if it's the programming that mirrored the texture that way (laterally along each plank) or if you did that, but it actually works for wood--sometimes something similar to that happens naturally... of course, I haven't really said anything bad about your textures yet... so maybe death--droid will bring it back down to earth (somehow he always finds the problems I overlook)...

Looking at your wood texture they seem to have strips of "Light" making it look kind of repetitive and not quite right.
Otherwise there fine!

EDIT:
I'm running all the mini maps that i dump through a hq4x filter. :p

Thanks everyone for the constructive comments. Greatly appreciated!

Death--Droid I'm glad you had a look at that b/c honestly somehow I missed those 'strips of light' you were referring to. They're noticeable, and it's a texture fault not a game fault.

I completely scrapped the texture and started from scratch..... 3 times!

Still can't seem to get it right. And now PSP is ticking me off, making a single pixel width highlight around each pic i'm editing.

I'll have to take a break so I don't get frustrated. I may pick it back up tonight after a fresh start!

@Zeckron: Welcome to my world. I worked and reworked texture in Jabu Jabu's belly so many times now I lost count... it takes some serious work and patience to get it right. All I can say is thanks for having that patience and making sure everything works right.

squall_leonhart i don't know why there is a yellow outer glow on the shields and the master sword.
Youll have to ask Driscol since he made them(I might try and remove the glow)

FYI all, I think I'm near the end of Jabu Jabu's belly... I had an epiphany last night, and so far it's paying off big time... although some of the textures may be a little too... grotesque... so I may have to go back and tone some stuff down... but hopefully I'll have an update later today.

Wonderful news Chieftain! Honestly, before I read your post mentioning you were working on Jabu Jabu, I was thinking to myself "I pity the fool". Guess that's you :)

Okay, let's try this wood paneling again. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of this one. Mainly b/c I don't like the grain (or lack thereof) and overall pattern. I skewed the colors to more closely match the original theme (old, faded, worn out, damaged looking) which kind of takes it down a notch. But I can revert back to a more fresh look if needed.

Unfortunately, with the textures I could get my hands on the clone tool just wasn't working out well at all. I even resorted to manually editing pixels one-by-one to ensure linear tiling. Still didn't look right. Guess I don't have the skill yet. So if this one doesn't pass, then I'll have to wait until I get better or someone else decides to take it over. No worries either way.

...OK, so I know I always like your textures and don't criticize them to the degree everyone else does, but this time I'm serious--color variation seems realistic, but not too repetitive. Wood grain and defects indicate ash or hickory (I think, it's been a long time since my horticulture and botany classes--can anyone else tell I spent a lot of time trying to find my career?), regardless, it certainly has the appearance of a real wood texture, albeit not a traditional grain (ie pine, cedar, oak, etc)... but I actually dig it. Actually, the coloring hints at some weathering (in my opinion), totally appropriate in a place near a lake and a pond, where moisture should be more abundant. Anyway, I'm good with it from the "realism" perspective... technically, I don't see any problems with seams in the continuous texture, so I think it's fine there.

Now... Beta Jabu Jabu is uploaded! So if I could get a few people to kindly test the pack out and shoot me some constructive criticism, that would rock.

Chieftain, after I changed my major the first time my dad told me "the most interesting people I've ever known are the ones that don't know what they want to be." I believe it.

Props to you for your wide variety of knowledge. Being able to ID a tree species by it's grain is proof of that. Thanks for your kind comments.

I'm looking through your Jabu-Jabu textures and they almost make me sick. But that's a good thing. I mean it in the most positive and complimentary way. After all, you're inside a freaking beast right? They look totally stunning!

Unfortunately they're not working for me. The game is defaulting to all the original textures. This is a problem for me, as I'm unable to view many other retextures people have done (most notably the sky boxes; again default to the original). At first I blamed this on my outdated PC, and that may still be the case, but is there a chance it's my emulator? I would assume an old PC and video card would just bog down the frame rates rather than completely fail to upload the new textures. I'm running Project64. What do you use? I would love to enjoy all the retextures that you and others have done.

Small change to the wood panels: one section in particular was bugging the hell out of me. Changed it, and looks much better to me.

Come to find out, this texture is used in more than one part of the game. Here's the fish pond and a couple other places I've seen it so far (possibly more, just don't know yet).

Fish pond of course:

Almost makes me think someone should keep a running inventory of the file names that are used in every area of the game. I'm sure Death--Droid has started such a list. But if not, let me know if I can help somehow.

Tall order about inventorying everything... but I've thought the same from time to time...

As far as emulation is concerned, I'm using 1964 with Rice for hires textures. To be honest, I know hardly anything about the details of emulation (I tend to not bother learning it when I can just find the answer/ask the questions on forums)... but I'm sure death--droid can help.

As I said before, some of the textures were fairly... graphic... in fact, quite a few textures are based off a base which is, literally, a photograph of the inside of a live human stomach which was viewed through one of those tube cameras they use in surgical situations... but I found that it made for the best "wet, bulbous and ill looking" textures... grosses me out thinking about it. Maybe having 16x32 pixel textures was a blessing in disguise!

The more I see it, the more I like your wood paneling. It works great in all those locations in my opinion.

Update--for Zeckron (and everyone else), some screenshots of Jabu Jabu.

Enjoy!
Also, I think I'm going to take a quick breather from dungeons and work on the rest of the Zora stuff--some of it's already done (thanks to Mode's Hyrule Field work), but Zora Domain has hardly been touched, and there's some stuff in Zora's Fountain and River that need doing. So that's where I'll be for a while.

And it's not red. I'm tired of red. Everything in the last two dungeons has been red.
