Is Pj64 fast enough?

I've never had speed problems on any of the systems I've used Project64. The only problem I've had is with sound popping.

As far as speed goes, every game I have ever tried on any system I've owned has run at full speed.

I ran it on a Celeron 566 (Coppermine) with 128MB of RAM and a 32MB GeForce2 MX (PCI), with a Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 and it ran flawlessly.

Next system was a Celeron 1.1GHz (Coppermine) with 256MB of RAM and a 64MB GeForce4 MX440(PCI) and a Live! 5.1 and it ran flawlessly too.

Now I'm running an AthlonXP 2800+ (Barton) with 512MB of RAM, a Radeon 9250 128MB (AGP obviously) and a Chaintech AV-710 soundcard configured for bit-perfect music playback and it runs with relatively low CPU use. ZSNES uses more CPU time than Project64!

On my laptop, a Turion64 ML-37 (2GHz), 1GB of RAM, an ATI Xpress 200M with 128MB of dedicated (not shared!) memory (PCI-E) and an intergrated soundcard, and it has no problem whatsoever.

I think speed problems have more to do with system configuration than hardware specs, espicially with most PCs from the last 3-4 years. The Athlon64 was released nearly 3 years ago and the AthlonXPs have been around for even longer, and GeForce3s were released in 2001. So system power shouldn't be a problem at all if someone built their system within the last half decade. It's all about how well it's configured.

Hi! I have an Amd 2000 xp+ with 512 mb ram and geforce4 mx with 64 mb ram.
The project64 works fine, but yes there is problems of speed, with this i want to say that all the games have a speed that makes them very well playable but when you play and you move the character sometimes speed increase too much and sometimes speed reduce a little for less than a second (this is boring for the eyes). This is only to say that the speed inside the games emulated by pj64 is not constant, but the speed in the N64 console is constant. I have founded this in Zelda, COnkers, Paper Mario, Mario 64....in all the games. So if you can make the speed inside the games constant this is very good.
Beyond the fixes on audio and video that are VERY important things to do (even more that speed adjustement) i'd like to see ALL the games playables. It's very bad that Papermario crashes all the times at the same points.
And if this is possible i'd like to see less advanced options inside the emulator, i don't understand many of this option (like transfer memory, etc.) but i'll be very happy if the emulator manage automatically this options inside himself in the better way when i run the pj64 (like the snes9x o epsxe o psxeven).

Project 64 is far and away, the best N64 emulator out there. 1964 and Nemu can't even come within a far cry of P64. It still needs a bit more work though. Some games (Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark) run choppy on my PC (HP Celeron, 2.93ghz, ATI Rage Turbo, 256 mb ram, 64 mb video), and I have to keep all of the video settings fairly low. Also, there's still lack of support for quite a few games.

I hope that some day, Project 64 will run N64 games as good as ZSNES runs SNES games, and considering how incredible this emulator is already, I have no doubts about that happening. Keep up the good work.

Well I'm pretty sure someone has already said this. I haven't read every comment on here. But I'd like to see the games actually run fully without crashing while using cheats, also, The same goes for Game Saves, Loading up states sometimes causes my games to crash, Not sure if it's the same for everyone else, perhaps it's my PC.

stopping games crashing while using cheats, in general, and stopping saves getting corrupted by using cheats, in general, is not possible. even if the emu was perfect, once you start editing game code the game is sometimes going to crash (and on the real n64 also crashes with some cheats).
we should be able to stop the app crashing though and just have the core error. that needs some work. also i have some ideas about saving people from ruining their saves, but we can't think of a perfect solution here either.

funny, some people say the opposite - that pj64 has constant speed where on the real console slows down.
basically, they have different slowdown issues i think.

I would like to see some graphic plugin fixes, some rom compatability fixes, and a NEW LAYOUT already! Build a shnazy new form to put the buttons and stuff in.

you whaa? this is off topic, but
if you mean the input plugin config, jabo has put a nice picture of an n64 controller in the middle and moved things about a bit.. dunno if that qualifies as "shnazy"? :sombrero:

Speed hasn't been a problem for me either, but a frame skipping option would be good for low-end machines like Celeron 600 MHz and lower Pentium III.

I agree with everyone about the crashes.

Project 64 is without a doubt the fastest and most compatible N64 emulator I've used. My machine is barely mid-end and all games still fly on PJ64, even with anisotropic and aa on. Only problems are the normal bugs that you might get with some games, or the exception of some games in particular that just run really horribly because they use things that haven't been implemented/optimized on the emulator.

I'm very happy with my emulation speed.

Speed is not a problem at all. I could run PJ64 on a Pentium II MMX 400MHz with no sound. Now it runs full speed WITH SOUND on my new Sempron 1.6GHz! The only problems I have ever had with PJ64 are crashes.

it would be useful if people who say "it crashes" say which game and when, and what type of crash, otherwise we've little chance of fixing some things.

I wonder why a poll has been set for such a long time... if team is waiting for people to get next gen cpu and graphics, a few more months should help, but not in my case. Speed is not good to me, most games are running slow. It is rarely reaching 50. Maybe it is because of the shadows: Glide 64 wonder plugin plays very smooth most of the time, but without shadows, and ability to finish the games. Zilmar's audio is helping in running pj 64 a bit faster.

Current speed OK

Speed is okay for today's PC standards, PJ64 almost did reach full speed on a K6-2/500 with a 64 MB Geforce 2 MX video card (oscillated around 70-80% of full speed in many games), which means anything above 1 GHz with an at least decent video card would do fine, only stuff like Perfect Dark might prove troublesome. My guess is, speed is never too much but doesn't need high sacrifices (compatibility etc.) in order to increase speed. Seeing as a 1 GHz machine can be classified as a 'low-end', it's OK as it is. Focus should go on improving compatibility/stability.

My two machines:
AMD K6-2/500 144 MB / Geforce 2 MX 64 MB
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2000@2300) 512 MB / Geforce FX 5500 128 MB

Smiff, I've found that Project64 1.6 often crashes when state-loading. With Diddy Kong Racing, for example, this seems to occur when I state-save in the middle of a race. It also sometimes crashes when I try to exit or when I start a game.

its fast enough.

but i think something should be done. like adding Your system is below the minimum requirement messages and telling them that project 64 might encounter problems and or crashes

PJ64 Speed

Speed is alright for about 10 minuets of play. Then the emulator gets laggy
and slows down a whole lot. I think PJ64 1.7 should require less RAM for
optimal preformance results...:plain:
