  • Most issues reported these days stem from users not enabling their emulators to use the required amount of RAM.
We also tend not to use the search feature but post our issues within the texture pack release page.
Failure to load a texture pack should not be posted in the release thread unless you have already patched the emulator.

If you don't have the resources to use Large/HD texture packs please do not attempt to do so.
Users should have a minimum amount of System RAM not less then 4GB's.
If you have less then 4GB's of RAM do not post about how your emulator crashes,
RAM is dirt cheap so invest some money into your PC.

Federelli's Retexture Pack for Zelda OOT and MQ

Amon, while your work is somewhat impressive, it's not what i'm after. I want higher quality work, such as Kman's.

I'll be a critic now, and tell you what's wrong with your textures :). Take it just as advice.
They are flat, and it's pretty easy to tell that the texture is being repeated constantly. You should try to make it so that you can't tell that the same texture is being repeated all the time.
They also like continuity. It seems like you used photosourced textures in your work. Don't, since realism is not the way to go with things that are seen all the time, specialy with rock walls.
If you'd like to make every single item, i'll be glad to include it in my pack (gray versions as well). Just make sure to make the drop shadow exactly the same for very item. Check my Ocarina to get it as equal as possible

Alas, it is true. I can tell as well that they are being repeated constantly, but I think I have recently found something to fix that.

I recently got in touch with the man who taught me how to use photoshop, and he took a look at this thread to see my work. He told me almost exactly what you said (only pointed out a few other things I need to improve on). He hooked me up with several plugins (one by the name of "seamless tiles") and told me a few techniques. Because of these, I am going back to the front of ganons castle and redoing the repetative tiles, mainly. When I post progress again, expect it to look seamless and a little more 3d looking. :p

As for the door, expect it to look really kicka$$ by the time I'm done as well. As for the items, no thanks, I'm not that good at those, plus I enjoy making world textures too much.

BTW, Fed, thank you for your critique, strange as it may sound, I like to know if people have ideas on how to improve anything I do.

I love this sense of community withen the thread here...but I think it should just contain Kman and Feds work. Perhaps a Zelda Community re-texturing thread should be erected. I mean no disrespect to others posting their work here, and yes I said erect :paperbag:

Fed: Almost done with all of the maps. Some of the more complex ones have alot of touch ups due to the way hq4x plays with right angles.

Are we sure there are only 23 maps? Seems like there has to be a lot more areas than that.

Oh also, I have played around with fixing the one map that has a gradient. I'm toying with something like this for the giant deku tree. I'm trying to keep it as similar to what the original map looked like, which is a 96x62 pixel mess. lol

Would there be any way to change the triangles that show your position/point of entrance? Or are those not textures.
rpg, I think you should take it a step further and add even more detail such as replace the tree houses with a smaller version of the deku tree. That's my take on it.

i am doing a little experimentation and am on the fence about this. this might be a little difficult as parts of the map are intentionally left blank to show the borders and such. there is always the problem of going overboard. I love the fact that this is nothing more than a simple replica of hyrule. it's also very tough to texturize on such a small scale and have it not look messy.

Its definitely do-able. Using the magic wand and adding or subtracting from the selection you can isolate for example a path or water. from here you can use the healing brush to blend in a gradient or pattern. you also have to take in to account that this is being displayed in tones of green. green textured grass may look great, but what about rocks, water, houses? my gut feeling is to just keep it simple, but let me play around and see what I can do. we might be able to jazz it up a little while still keeping close to the original.

rpg: yeah, I can certify you that "only" 23 area are.

btw, i've find almost all dungeon maps (not the sub-screen ones) about 188. and i search a easy (but good) way to redone all...

I just signed up to say that this is an AMAZING project. Also those shrubs are lookin pretty fine too. I'm just curious though if textures in my game are not displaying. I'm using the newest rice, the newest texture pack from this thread, and project 64. And I'm seeing high rez textures in these images of the items in the menu screen and such, and I don't seem to have any of these. Just the default sword icon and a few others. Is this normal? And are there other zelda packs out there that you guys used in combination with this one?

Fed and K-man are currently working on their project, and this is their thread. I just like to post my ramblings here, and so do others who work on Zelda. Whatevers here posted by others will most likely be re-done by somone better. Kman :D

Yeah I read through some of the thread and saw the things KMan posted. The guy is amazing. If only he could clone himself into 10 people, he could remake OoT into the best looking zelda ever in no-time.

Oh and another question. If the entire game ever does get 100% retextured in 4x scale, like it seems to be planned, will a 128MB Radeon 9800 with 64MB VRam Aperture be enough to store all these textures and retain smooth gameplay?

By the way I would love to help with the project, but I have no idea what sections are being worked on currently. I want to dive into something that wont be for waste. I was thinking that some kind of texture database would help keep this project extremely organized and effecient. Someone could make an html page with a big database of every texture in the game, the image of the original and an image of the new (if available), with boxes for any additional info, and a check box indicating if the new texture is considered a final product. What does everyone think?

I think this would be a decent idea, but it would only work if Kman and Fed actually used it to their advantage. I assume they are using their own sort of organization methods anyhow.

screenshots are great and all

Kerber, you planning on putting your png for the shrubs up? They're lookin pretty sweet, and the shrubs were actually the main thing that's been driving me nuts in Kokiri Forest, glad to see someone redid em with the quickness. Looks pretty damn good... I'd like to leech it hardcore style, if you could put it up =D

And just a few comments on the whole demeaning banter... I think it's silly to just shoot someone down, like Djipi, just because they're ameteur. He states that his is ameteur, not a work like Fed or KMan, so what's the point in degrading him further? Yeah, he's a foreigner, and his command of the english language warrants a little more practice on his part... But I think the point is that the whole Zelda retexturing community kicks ass, and his stuff is really just filler until someone implements something better (which seems to happen often in this thread :p ). Let's face it: No one is doing the high-caliber work that Kman and Fed are, but unenhanced N64 games are so LQ, they make my eyes want to bleed.

Thank you all for kicking ass and releasing these textures to us, because seriously... The new iterations of Zelda have been lacking, and being able to come back to a game I loved, but have it be up to waaaaaay higher standards is beautiful. Thanks again, guys, for sharing your talent.

Well put. I finally read through the entire thread, and I did notice quite a lot of newbie bashing. If someone successfully replaces a texture in their game, and shows us a screenshot, don't make fun of them or viciously shoot them down. Because when they accomplish this, it shows 2 things:

1) They are in fact NOT a newbie
2) They have a geniune motivation to help the project

It doesn't matter if their work is currently low quality, or it doesn't fit with the game's style. Just go easy on them, give them subtle advice, and you will be surprised how quickly they will come back with improved results. The more negativity in this project, the less of a chance we have of it ever being completed.

Also, I'm 100% sure that most of my textures are NOT loading. When the game starts up, it flies through maybe 50 textures in 2 seconds, then the rom plays. Thats not even close to the full set.

Got a good room? I Doubt it :)

As retexturing, try the graveyard, kakariko village...

Kerber, that bush would look great, though, could you darken the area where it meets the floor?

Great. Got them all done then.

Can you post a few of the dungeon maps? I would love to have a look a them. I would also love to look at the subscreen ones as well.

Amon_Knives could you put together a texture pack, because your textures are honestly amazing, i havent searched the whole thread 50+ pages, but it would be sweet. also you and kman should get together cuz he also seems talented in texturing and make a separate thread for oot texture mod?
