I would be more than happy to donate to PJ64 to support on-going developement of the emulator, although i don't want to donate and see no real progress in the next release, im hoping that real progress is being made through the 1.7 beta release, i will more than likely donate in a week or 2 as i would like to test the 1.7 beta, i seriously hope my money helps support the project
Long Live Project 64
I'm sure the donation will help the team regardless. They mentioned somewhere that while of course the more $$ the better, any amount will do, especially if many people only donate that amount since the money will add up. However, keep in mind, all in all it IS just a donation.
You need to enter the notion that the hour if you were send in your donation, the PJ64 team could announce end support for good, disband and get back to the rest of their lives in full. Such donations are true with even commercial products. Support and donations for them is no garuantee that the the next big sequel or upgrade will come to fruition. However again, seeing as this project has come along 6 years from something so-so to IMHO the best N64 emu out there, it looks like the PJ64 team has some miles left in them. IMO again, I don't know what possible major improvements there could be, other than better game compatibility or video/ROM issues. I'm happy with what we've got now. In a fantasy world, I'd like the PJ64 team to make improvements to other emus like ePSXe (which I use and like very much, but it could still use improvement). I'm not a big multiplayer person for emus, but I guess netplay could be exciting if it isn't at the cost of what's already available.
Bottom line, donate b/c 1) you want the PJ64 team to have the $$ for their
past efforts as well as their present and future efforts and 2) you want the members only forum access and early beta access. Otherwise, don't consider donation $$ to be thrown away if the next build isn't quite what we expected or hope.
I just realized that the next version that us 'solid' donaters get to use is a beta. I know in some circles, betas are more stable and better than any final product, even that's sold commercially will ever be, but with my more complex emulators (anything "above" GBA), I'd prefer the kinks to be worked out for good while sticking with a working version that I'm used to. Nice to know the priveliged forums are also available as another nicety.

Im sorry but 20$ dollars? Way to high try like maybe 5 bucks. I know it may be wrong to disagree but thats the way it goes. Thats almost the cost of a game at the store, which is finished.
Not sure about your demographics, but in the eastern US, only games in the bargain bins go for $20. This includes your typical selection of olden PC, GC, PS2, and XB. Generation before that like n64 and ps1 especially so. New curr-gen PC and console games go for $40 to $60.
Sure, you can buy N64 cartridges on ebay for $4 to $20 a pop, and that's with shipping included, but upon its release, N64 games went for $100 a pop for new games before PS1 came out and Nintendo dropped it to $60.
Even if you were to buy a used N64 now, it'll still cost around $40 and up. $20 should be a small fraction for most ppl who also pay $30 to $150/mo for internet and/or TV, $40+/mo for cellphone bill, and hundreds of $$ for insurance. I think there was talk of a "required" donation of $20/yr for those who'd like to retain priveliges for members access, but still a small drop in the bucket. I know some ppl here may not be as in a financially ideal situation, but i suppose that would be forgoing half a concert ticket.
Long story short again, IMO, $20 is reasonable. U can always donate what you have now and pay the difference later for the bonus stuff. Just make sure the recipients are aware of your previous donations.
