you have to license the tech., it costs, i don't know how much... would be interesting to know. And to know how many people are put off by the simplest anti-copy tech... suppose 80% of potential pirates are put off by just making the CD too big. The only anti-copy system i've seen that impresses me is Half-Life's keys + WON; sure you can crack it for youself and make as many copies as you like, but to play online you gotta have that key.. very elegant. Come to think of it, Half-Life is the best value game purchase i've ever made, they deserve their £20 and then some.

Another game that fits into this catgeory:
Starcraft.....VERY hard to play on original battle.net without getting an original Cd key (and I wouldnt try to much without original cdkey as i've eard that they log quite a lot of your system information??? .....you CAN play on other servers (as you can with half life) but they suck to say the least....

Blizzard has done very well against anti pirating by offering a hard-to-hack online solution....and most of their games is worth buying just for that. I can say that Starcraft is the best buy I have ever made, worth the 20$ :)

I copy loads of games due to EB's 10 day return policy, but I do buy some occasionaly. I'm not condoning what I do, but the current price of games is way beyond what I can afford

the current price of games is way beyond what you can afford becasue of pirates.
and another thing, Nintendo had a good thing going with the cube with the small discs and all untill they released the panisonic version which can fit a regular size DVD. it wont be long untill that thing is chipped.

yeah, I bought half life because of the cd key protection thing (and the small bonus of a single player game). more companies are doing it now, but sierra are the ones who've used it most efficiently eg avp2

well my opinion is that the modchips were the succes of the PSX. Maybe the gamemakers got much loss because of piracy but sony himself made much profit

(Look to the N64 you could copy the Carteridges so thats why I think the N64 isn't that succesfull as the PSX)

sony loses $ when selling game consoles, just like any other company. They make their profit through licensing gamemakers.

Sk8bloke: The PS2 is NOT hard to crack at all )the mod chips ain't THAT compicated....and you can get many stores to do it for you), and was cracked almost at once it was released......only thing is that DVD burners are so expensive, but many games fit on 1 cd....

actually compared to the psx and DC, its much harder to find shops to mod ur ps2. the neo2 mods were very unreliable, and required double-swaps for DVDrs which is frigging annoying. theres been soooo many problems in getting true non-swap mods as they involve injecting code which is totally illegal, and sony simply crack down like bitches on the companies who manufacture such chips. messiah is the only true non-swap mod, but thats hard to find, ridiculously expensive, and very very tricky to install. ok now, there are quite a few different mods available, but it still took a while. and downsized dvd games on a cdr often involve taking out a lot of stuff...metal gear solid 2 is just pointless to downsize, for example, u need to take out all the movies, and like speech, and wats left is a very short game. and yes, the nintendo hav been extremely clever in tackling pirate software.
