I made the switch from Netscape 7.1 to Firefox this weekend.

While Firefox is a bit of a memory hog (even more so than Netscape), it still beats the crap out of IE (but then, so did Netscape 7).

that could be one or more of the extensions you're using, some of them are really crappy(like tabbrowser extensions, it's just a massive memory hole)

tabbrowser extensions is essentially obsolete since about all of the features it does are built-in nowadays.

also, you can try this (long) thread on Firefox Tuning for lots more "about:config" options.

Sorry, I don't have that problem, because Mozilla Firefox most of the time don't have difficulty with finding domain names.

Here are the meanings of the status on the bottom left corner:

Looking up (domain name)- This means that Mozilla Firefox is searching the DNS servers for the domain name you typed in.

Connecting to (domain name)- This means it's trying to connect to a web server and hasn't gotten any web server rersponse yet. If Mozilla Firefox just sits at "Connecting to x" for a long time, then it means the web server probably is going to fail to respond. When that occurs, Mozilla Firefox will display the message saying that a timeout occured.

Waiting for (domain name)-Please don't get this confused with "Connecting to (domain name)". This means that the web server did respond, but Mozilla Firefox hasn't received any additional packets yet.
