I'm thinkin of gettin a PSP, and has anyone imported it from japan or pre-ordered it in usa? If anyone's got one, can u say wot u think of it, and how the battery life is to u?
cheers people

I heard that the battery life is around 6-8 hours and around 3 hours when processing a lot, kind of a shame really, i hope the US/UK release has a better battery

Jaz
March 14th, 2005, 19:37
I'd like to get one, although word around the campfire is that the battery life is only around 4 hours.

Pretty rubbish, but I may still invest when they drop to under £100.

I just don't like the concept myself, even though I have had the opportunity to see one personally (the firing a UMD trick amused me for about 5 minutes, until it happened once accidentally while playing. I also dislike the `slider` immensely). I don't plan on repurchasing the few movies I'd want to watch on an (allegedly quite prone to breakage) UMD, the screen is not quite the wonderous thing the press would have you believe. Nor do I have any desire to spend hours converting movies (if possible) for it, or to use a device that size for music when I can throw tracks on my USB2 mp3 player or vast amounts of albums/data onto my HI-MD Minidisc recorder (1GB per disc... yummy.) Oddly enough the one thing I never checked on was battery life.

Also when it comes to games, I'd much rather have something just pure laugh-out-loud fun that works better than say Ridge Racer on the move... like Warioware Touched! or even the catapult minigame in Mario64DS, or throw up a pictochat or Hunter's game and see how long it takes for someone to join. I'm waiting semi-patiently for Animal Crossing with WIFI, and for Nintendogs and Electroplankton, two of the most original and clever `experiences` out there.
I love the control system and the fact the whole thing is just built for one purpose; Quick, instantly enjoyable and fun games. No loading garbage, no comical flaws or shoehorned in funcionality, just games. Nintendo make the best of them - we all know that.
Sony don't want it as a games machine, therefore I have no real need for one.

The psp has approximetly 6 hours of battery life. And if you try to watch movies on it, it will hold out barely enough to watch the entire movie (battery life, ca 2.5 hours I think). This is what I've read, though. I'm not going to purchase one of those crap machines for $200+.
So... after watching a movie, you'll have to recharge it and... WAIT A MINUTE! The psp has no rechargeable battery!!!
Oh yeah, and the screen is much easier to scratch. Just what you'd expect from sony. Idiots.

hrm ... holy shit thats news to me. the psps concept look great in the beginning but the battery life alone, the screen, the flying discs of doom and all that really bring the thing down, its pathetic. not to mention not a single game worth playing so far.

Of course the PSP has a rechargeable battery, something else would be rediculous.

Not from sony. So let me check again then, but from what i've heard it has no rechargeable battery (or at least no charger).
EDIT: It seems sites are ambigious, stating both. What from sony's official site?
EDIT2: Okay, I THINK that if you want rechargeable battery you need to buy those stupid packs. Buying the system alone won't do it, afaik. Can't be sure, but the battery time is very poor nevertheless.

Seriously, it having a rechargable battery is so obvious that you shouldn't even question it. It's a lithion-ion battery by the way...and yes, they are rechargeable :P

I'd question it if it were sony! They apparently like to piss us off. Or be non-nice in a general way (as in not being the way nintendo is).

Don't know that much about batteries... did not know lithion is rechargeable, by default at least...

Well, that's some good news, but the battery time is too short for one thing.

wtf, you were expecting to buy a new Li-ion battery every 3 hours?

Doomulation
March 23rd, 2005, 08:56
Did not know it was using li-ion battery. After all, the old gameboy advance was still using normal batteries. And the next machine I was getting was the DS, which had this li-ion or whatever it's called. Plus I've only read about the psp; not owned one.

March 26th, 2005, 17:29
My wife was asking me about whether the PSP would be something to consider buying.

We travel often enough, and a PSP would beat lugging her laptop around if we're just using it to watch a movie or two on flights, especially if the battery time is about the same.

But, then I had to explain to her what the hell the UMD is, and how we'd be stuck buying or renting (has Sony talked about that as an option yet?) movies we possibly already have.

So, either rentals would need to be an option, or some sort of blank UMD that I could take an existing DVD and convert it onto a UMD for use.

Even then, I've read articles that say the PSP is best for what it was first designed for: games. All else on the PSP - movies, music - is not as good as advertised.

knowitman
March 29th, 2005, 00:28
The music and movies in actuallity are pretty good. The music could be a little better since it only allows one folder level inside the music folder which would be like artist instead of 2 sublevels arist-->album. That can easily be fixed with a firmware upgrade I bet. The video is also pretty good. I've heard of UMD movie rentals. You could also buy a 1 gig memory stick and then rip a DVD and fit it on there. You could only fit one movie though. They don't make blank UMDs or anything right now. The movies also use a pretty tough encryption so it would be hard to make one even if you could burn UMDs.

Apparently my brother's DS has a few dead pixels. Nintendo's official response was to "give it a few weeks" and see if he still minded before getting it replaced. Right... because they'll get less distracting on that small screen how? ;)

I personally can't believe it's still perfectly legal for a company to sell a product with defective pixels like this and not have to offer a replacement. Keeps me from considering LCD monitors or TV's as an option though, so it saves me money if nothing else.

cooliscool
April 4th, 2005, 00:17
IIRC Nintendo and Sony were offering replacements for units with dead pixels.. but to be honest, 1, 2, or even 3 dead pixels isn't as annoying as it may sound. My friend's PSP has 3 and you can really hardly tell when you're in a game or movie..

Luckily, my DS's pixels are all perfect. :)

knowitman
April 4th, 2005, 06:33
I think I may have one dead pixal. I only notice it if I look for it really close to the screen and the conditions on the screen are just right. I know a guy that had a DS, and he said he had one that was really noticable.

Just incase the dead pixal starts to annoy me or I get more I'll just call Sony up and get a new one before the warrenty expires.

Hexidecimal
April 4th, 2005, 06:57
I have 0 dead pixels on my DS, and I won't buy a PSP until the price drops to about 100 bucks. 250 dollars for a handheld is insane. Espically with the measly battery life.

I purchased a PSP from videogamesplus.ca and recieved it withing three days, they marked the box $20 CDN (childrens toy) so i didn't have to pay import tax.
Absolutely no dead pixels, and the quality of the games/movies/screen is unbelievable, and i am not that easily impressed, unless you happen to be topless with a carefree attitude towards sex :P ...and female...hurrah!
I ordered it with Ridge Racer and a SanDisk Memory Stick PRO Duo 512mb and a few other bits and bobs, currently waiting for Fifa 2005 and Hotshots golf to arrive..
I am a battle hardened gamer and have owned most home systems, so trust me when i say that when you see one of these, touch one of these, you will want one. Now, if they hurry up with that browser firmware update, i can stick my laptop up the loft :) (yes i know about the wipeout hack...*shudders*)

If it was a toss up between being given one of these systems, or a chinese lady giving me money for sexual favours... you know what.........SHOW ME THE MONEY! :D

Jaz, you honestly wont regret it, and the fact they don't region lock the games is a huge bonus. How they packed that kind of technology into that small unit i will never know.
Did you order any games with it?

I ordered from ImportMadness.com.

- PSP Hardware (PSP-1000K Value Pack)
- Gretzky NHL
- 32 MB Memory Stick Duo
- Headphones with remote control
- Battery pack
- AC adaptor
- Soft case and cleaning cloth
- Movie/music/game video sampler UMD disc including multiple non-interactive game demo

All for £169, and 2-3 Courier Delivery Worldwide.

I'm going to order Wipeout today seeing as I just got paid, and mayble Twisted Metal also.

Anyone played Metal Gear Ac!d?

Doomulation
May 9th, 2005, 09:43
Ack, you big spenders. The psp is a little tad too expensive still.
The funny thing though, is that if you get the right accessories, the psp and the ds are pretty much equal in functionality, yet the ds costs less. But then, the accessories... -_-
Take care of those psps now, you hear? They're fragile :p

Jaz
May 10th, 2005, 19:44
Well my PSP arrived yesterday (see attached!), and I must say that I am very impressed with it.

The video quality on it when watching films is incredible. It's so much better than I had expected. I figured I wouldn't use it to watch movies too much, but my opinions changed drastically after watching movies on it for about 2 minutes! It really blew me away.

As for the games, I've only played Gretzky's Hockey for a small while, but it is pretty damn good. I'm expecting Wipeout and Twisted Metal in the next few days, so I shall save comment until they arrive.

Overall though, I am thouroughly chuffed with my PSP - well worth the money, and I can certainly see it getting used with the summer coming up!

Jaz is officially a PSP convert.

I cannot reccomend ImportMadness.com enough. They only charge £6.99 for 3 day shipping (ordered on Thursday, got it on Monday), and they marked it as a $30 toy so I didn't even have to pay any import tax.

For the record, I've heard stories that people have paid in excess of £50 import tax from other companies.

Again, highly recommended. Plus they were one of the cheapest options anyway!

Doomulation

ImportMaddness is expensive, this I know. But... I suppose that if you wish to pay extra for something, go ahead.

Based on what I bought...

Lik-Sang
PSP Value Pack - £149.
Gretzy Hockey - £26.51.
UK Adaptor - £9.99.
Spiderman 2 UMD - £21.20.
Postage to UK - £17.99.
Total: £224.79.

ImportMadness
PSP Value Pack - £149.
Gretzky Hocky - £20.
Spiderman 2 UMD - Free.
UK Adaptor - Free.
Postage to UK - £6.99.
Total: £176.98.

PlayAsia

PSP Value Pack - £150.12.
Gretzky Hockey - £26.76.
UK Adaptor - Free.
Spiderman 2 UMD - £20.23.
Postage to the UK - £16.96.
Total: £217.07.

Furthermore, it has been announced in the UK that the PSP will be released over here in September with the price of the basic pack at £180. So if you think of it logically, I managed to get it 5 months before it comes out over here, with a free game, movie and accessories, and for £4 cheaper.

Personally I didn't think it was a bad deal.

Doomulation

Hmm, yes you're right. Quite a bargain. There doesn't seem to be a popular site that has any cheaper price (dvdboxoffice ~145£). But I have previously seen (at least concerning games) that they're much more expensive at importmadness (plus shipping! O_O) than at dvdboxoffice, at the very least...

*Shrugs* Good deal, I guess.
