As for the actual assembly portion of a custom pc, it's alot easier than most people think. And as a general rule, the manual that comes with whatever motherboard you buy will tell you everything you need to know. Of course, some general knowledge about how a pc works is helpful. Most of the process is just common sense.
Agree on Newegg, one of the only sites I use now. If you want to shop for potentially better deals though, check out Pricewatch.

Haaa ! I've been waiting for this question ! Here's a configuration for around 2000 bucks 
You need...
1. Mainboard : Socket 754 or 939/940
2. CPU : A corresponding one for the socket ( athlon 64 on Socket 754 and Athlon FX on 939/940
3. Case : CS-901 is my recommendation , well equipped with fan sockets
4. Graphics Card : X800 XT or 6800 Ultra , take what you want !
5. Hard disc : I prefer Seagate , they're unhearable .
6. Drive : A Plextor DVD-Burner , you can't do anything wrong with plextor !
7. Power supply : at least 450 Watts !
That explanation isn't very exact , ask somebody else for exact recomendations , i'm not that experienced with the Athlon 64-generation CPU's .

Well, let's not leave out the possibility of going Pentium 4 Extreme Edition either. Also, for my set up, it had a 450 watt supply in it, but I had to step it up to 700 watts (not sure if it's because of all the lights :happy: ). As far as hard drives, you and me think alike, nothing seems to compare to a Seagate. I've tried Maxtor and Western Digital in the past and have paid the penalty for it. Fujitsu's pretty good too though. But the best part of making the choice to build your own system is getting to make decisions like this.

Mainly, an average system like mine doesn't require much power, I have a 300W and it's just fine, (XP3000+, 512MB DDR333, GFX5700, 2HDs, 1 CDRW, 1DVD, and a bunch of fans with leds.) And no overheating.
About the system itself, most stuff Shadow said are great, if you get a system like that, you should have no problem running almost everything (except Dolphin at full speed)
