This is very true, especially when comparing the lifespan of cart systems versus disc based. My NES still works flawlessly and I haven't had to do anything to it but take care of it. There are a lot more moving parts that can and do wear out on disc based platforms whereas carts just have to touch the contacts in the older systems.
