... and I want some advice from you guys... first... what specs do you recommend for burning DVDs decently... second... does Linux has DVDRW capabilities.... and third... what drives do you recommend... what about the LG GSA-4040B ? :ermm:

Yes, there are programs for linux which let you burn DVDs.

In my experience, LG drives are very good, especially for the price. I doubt you'll have a problem with one. :)

Simple, Pioneer DVR-107, just get some nice hacked firmware and you can burn any DVD-R media at 8x too :)

The 106D is 4X, but it's the external model (for my laptop). I say it works great because with the hacked firmware it rips at 12X, has never made a bad disk, and is extremely quiet.

In my experience, Plextor makes the best optical drives available. I havent found anything better and I wouldnt buy anything else myself.

Right, plexwriters never failed me either. I've seen other writers get the DVDs, CDs and even themselves destroyed (toshiba, teac, pionner, yamaha, sony, lite on) but my plexwriter still survives somehow (with its eject button missing)...
Most writers begin having troubles after 12-18 months but I haven't seen any plexwriter doing this.

I would get the BenQ DVD822A it will have firmware to upgrade it to a DVD+R double-layer recordable drive the first of its kind, it can also do -r. More info here http://www.benq-eu.com/Products/DVDRewriter/index.cfm?product=412&page=features

the first of it's kind? really? that's odd - my nec2500a is ALREADY dual-layer dvdr compatible using the nec 2510 firmware:satisfied as soon as those DL disk become available - i'll be burning them with my flashed 2500a.....

the two top drives in the running are the pioneer a07 or the nec-2500a. Either one will do you fine:)

I ordered a nec2500a and it should be here any day. Supposidly it is a pretty good burner and its pricing was very attractive as well, $81 for the oem :)

There is a firmware for the nec nd2500a to make it dual layer, it is still experimental

So, we have opinions on the drives.

What about the discs? Who makes the best dvd-r/rw with all the myriad types of burning that's possible?
