Yes, there are programs for linux which let you burn DVDs.
In my experience, LG drives are very good, especially for the price. I doubt you'll have a problem with one.

I've got a Pioneer too (D106) and it works great.

The 106D is 4X, but it's the external model (for my laptop). I say it works great because with the hacked firmware it rips at 12X, has never made a bad disk, and is extremely quiet.
I would get the BenQ DVD822A it will have firmware to upgrade it to a DVD+R double-layer recordable drive the first of its kind, it can also do -r. More info here http://www.benq-eu.com/Products/DVDRewriter/index.cfm?product=412&page=features

Right, plexwriters never failed me either. I've seen other writers get the DVDs, CDs and even themselves destroyed (toshiba, teac, pionner, yamaha, sony, lite on) but my plexwriter still survives somehow (with its eject button missing)...
Most writers begin having troubles after 12-18 months but I haven't seen any plexwriter doing this.

the two top drives in the running are the pioneer a07 or the nec-2500a. Either one will do you fine
