What's new

current consoles have no originality

It's shocking that the PS2/GC/XBOX have been out 2-3 years (getting near the end of their cycle) and I can only name one new classic ORIGINAL game: GTA III. You've got a couple good retread fps in Metroid and Halo, but I'd still take 5-year old Halflife and CS any day over them. With PS1 and even N64 (which is often called a "disappointment") you've got great originals like Resident Evil, MGS, Mario64, Gran Turismo, Zelda OOT, Dino Crisis, Tony Hawk, Vagrant Story, Tomb Raider, NFL Blitz, Mario Party/Parappa the Rapper, Conker's, Wave Race. And the sequels aren't that much better if at all.... Well at least the next-gen consoles aren't too far off.

GTA III is a sequel, but I get your point. Making on original game is too much of a risk, when they know Tomb Raider 12 and Fifa '2053 will sell millions of copies on name alone.

I can agree that the current systems doesn't have the same feel their predecessors did, very questionable for psx, which ihmo, is a shitty although fun console.

No feel was put into xbox or ps2 and the feeling I hope nintendo tried to put into GC got lost somewhere along the way. Next console that comes out I wont even consider buying it, GC made me in some senses never ever consider anything then retro gaming.

Too much effors is put into looks. I'm sure a lot of people have played MGS2, half the game is made up out of CG. What's up with that? I rather have bad graphics, i.e FF3 and great gameplay then great graphics and bad gameplay, i.e Resident Evil.

I think you are in for a disappintment if you put your hope in the next generation of consoles, I'm sure FFXV could be gorgeus but probaly not to much soul in it. And gameplay and soul is what counts.

First off, keep in mind that over time it gets harder and harder to innovate. As more things get done, less new things CAN be done. Granted, the well of new ideas is pretty endless, but people THINKING OF things from that well slows down over time.

Also, you're really shallow and obviously don't keep up with the industry. There ARE other fresh games.

Have you ever played Pikmin, Cubivore, or Animal Crossing?

Bzzt. It's ALL REALTIME. There is not a single prerender in all of MGS2, except of course for textures.

-EDIT- And just so you know, when Hideo Kojima makes a game, he pours EVERYTHING HE HAS into it. He's one incredible game director.

FFX was excellent IMO, especially its storyline.

Yeah, bad example. It's all realtime but still, there's alot of telling me what's happening in stead of letting me do it by myself. He's probaly one of the better game makers but MGS2 doesn't appeal to me. And I've played it.

I haven't played it so I wouldn't know, but it isn't a longshot that Square will make a blockbuster out of their money making franshice. It probaly has a good blend of looks and gameplay. And storytelling has always been a big part of the FF series...

personally FFX is one of the more overrated FF games, but there's only so often you can have a bunch of strangers coming together to save the world from some massive danger before it gets old.

Tagrinth: Whilst those three are original, two were for the N64 originally ;) (along with Kirbys Air Ride) and graphically they leave a lot to be desired, and although graphics don't make a game, each new generation sets a standard which we as consumers expect, and that will play a big part in it.

remember, that games don't necessarily have to be original to be fun, (Halo), and some games just need to provide a change on an established genre (Ikaruga)

Blizz, yes, FFX was kinda overrated, but it was still fantastic IMO.

And yes, granted, Cubivore and Animal Crossing were originally for N64, but hey, they aren't, they're for GC now. :flowers: (and yes, I'm aware of the J-only Animal Forest...)

In my household, we have one of each of the Next Gens, except for PS2, which we bought another after the first stated giving us disc read errors. I will agree, there are less original titles, but that doesn't bother me, I like sequels as much if not more then their predocessors, (look at darkcloud 2, kicked way more ass then darkcloud) what bothers me is lack of engaging games, or maybe im just growing out of cosoles. There was a time when I could spend 4 hours playing a single game on a console, now, after an hour or so, I'm bored, and have to turn it off. I never got past the precinct of Splinter Cell, got snagged in one part, got bored, and turned off the console, there aren't enough games that pull you in and make you want to keep playing anymore, that's what irks me.

Nothing new there - I get bored rather easily with most any games, console or pc.

This problem is exacerbated by insanely long copyrights.

Damn you, Disney. Damn you to Wisconsin.

i totally agree, apart from being overated, in the UK you dont hear anything about it. I have completed it once in nearly 60hrs, and have already started a new game, i think the game is superb, especially the graphics and emotion in the characters, and the storyline is prertty touching too.

I still play the game now and then, and is my favorite game i have ever played at the moment.

I know you guys think otherwise, but everybody has different tastes

I've been playing pc games for the majority of the time as of late, the gc dissapointed me and I didn't get the xbox. I was going to pick it up just to play conker live and uncut.... which is what I orginally bought the gc for aside from smash bros melee.

The ps2 is the best out of the 3 imo, games like zoe, zoe 2 i'd say are some what orginal ... hell zoe 2 kicked ass. Then there is virtua fighter 4/ evolution and others. Still i'd have to agree and say there aren't too many orginal games nowadays on the consoles. Which is way am a little more interested in pc games.... well just 2 games anyway ut2003/4 and halflife 2.

The pc is the worst though when it comes to orignality, lol everything is either an mmorpg, rpg, rts, or a fps. With an action game once every leap year lol.

I'd say I have more fun now playing on my Dreamcast than I do on my PS2 or GameCube.

(because i have no freakin clue where the quote button is)

I definatly am a Dreamcast fan, if for no other reason because any game you can't buy, you can surely download. That and emulators are in constant development for the Dreamcast, now if only someone could port Gens to DC....Any Takers?

Thats funny...I seem to recall more things being invented nowadays than ever. That sounds like when somebody at the end of the 19th century that said everything that can be invented has been invented. The possibilities of inventions are practicaly limitless; it's like evolution, its just perpetual.

I think what you realy mean here is that while a company is successful, it gets harder and harder for it to innovate the longer it stays successful...Namely, we have a bunch of already well established companies who make money by throwing money at recycling a bunch of old ideas. What needs to happen is to have somebody who is totaly unheard of just come out of nowhere with a novel new video game idea, unfortunately this will not happen until the current video game market hype dies down for a while.

I dont think nes or gb roms will ever make it public domain, i dont think nintendo will let it go :p

NES games will start to fall unstoppably into public domain in 2135, assuming copyright laws don't change by then. =)
