That aside, I for one have no doubt that this bill will not pass, the media (who has the tendancy to stand out) has already slammed it several times, and one of it's clauses is a direct violation of the first ammendment (if they revise the offending portion, then this law is actualy pretty meaningless). It also wouldn't surprise me if the DMCA were to be changed in the near future because of all of the heat it has been getting from fair use.

Are you sure? The first amendment gives the freedom of Press, Speech, and Religion. I dont see how this bill can violate that.

eagle, do you LIVE in the us? cause if you do, then you oughta be aware that the constitution, especially the bill of rights, is effectively as good as TOILET PAPER and has been since the time when our elected leader was murdered and replaced by a corporate good ol' boy.

and now we're under good ol' boy number 7 or something, and it's only going to get much, much worse.

azimer is absolutely right, our "rights" basically extend to having the freedom to pay a top notch lawyer and out bid your opponent these days.

i dare any of you to outbid virgin records, or nintendo, for that matter.

"you're in the jailhouse now.... you're in the jailhouse now!!!" (oh brother where are thou sdtrk.) (go d/l it on kazaa, IF YOU DARE!)

I think that a new bill should be proposed that prevents for-profit entities/groups from funding elected officials into office.

Counter thoughts?

yes the goverment is the ones taking the rights from you.. the goverment isn't 1 person.. it's not the president.. it's a stack of people who mainly work on money and some kind of respect to the public.. many of them are biased to one of these sides but if you go thru it basically.. that is what they do.. a goverment official is a guy in the goverment.. he might be the one with the idea.. bill.. marriage proposal or whatever.. but it is the whole goverment that in the end decides if it is to become law..

so yes.. the goverment is the one who is stripping you from your rights.. and don't just blame that one person even though you might not like his idea it's like shooting the messenger.. maybe it wasn't even his idea.. but someone came to him.. gave him a bunch of money.. and he didn't refuse :).. what he gains?.. publicity and money or if not money still he gets recognition and publicity of some kind.. and for a guy in that type of carrier it could help alot.. what i'm saying is that it's not the person that presents the bill to the goverment.. it's the goverment that decides :p..

also.....

as i said.. if they keep going further.. i mean if they just keep getting deeper and deeper into this.. the war will only get much much worse.. by the time they have every right to do what they want with our systems.. their own systems will be so mest up they won't have a website anymore and they'll be pretty much hated.. this isn't anything new.. it's happend b4 in other countries.. not at this huge scale.. but it has.. and i doubt they'll "win".. if anything we'll all lose.. bcoz what will happen is that making war on them is only gonna make the goverment think about it more.. since they should have the right to defend themselfs and their busyness and they don't.. so even though i know they'll be attacked to death.. it might be what tips the balance and makes the goverment say.. "ok.. do whatever you wan't" :p..

well honestly.. it'll most probably be something like:..

they'll be monitoring the internet and see whos downloading mp3s the most.. then they'll have to go thru IP address and ISP and see who this guy is etc.. then they'll have some kind of paperwork.. and maybe in a couple of days they'll be able to do something about it.. i doub't the goverment will ever let them skip all of that.. because if they do.. it won't be organized.. and a thing like this has to be kept tight and very organized.. wich they will never manage to do anyways.. also they won't be able to catch everyone.. only the most extreme ppl in hope of scaring the rest.. not only that.. this will cost them megabucks.. they'll lose more than they gain on it.. and maybe eventually they'll figure out a much better way of dealing with this..

i believe the next revolutionary step in an OS from MS that comes along will have more security of this type.. but don't quote me on that.. it would'nt surprise me if Bill got money from the RIAA to work on some kind of security platform for movies and music online..

ok this got long now :p..

That one person may be have some small leverage, but he certainly doesn't speak for the whole government, and the government is NOT bent on taking all of our rights away. Even if such was the case, here we have a history for rebelling (the revolution, the civil war, just to name a few) If the laws are opressive, bellieve me, they won't stand! I follow the motto "Live free or die", as do most other americans (or at least the truely patriotic ones). Though it may not seem this way to foreigners, our government is run by the people, for the people, I can't say the same for the rest.

Now, the surface of the "digital millennium" hasn't even been scratched yet, and the dmca will eventualy see its end once it truely has been challenged; its still rather new. (just wait until the big corporations start fighting amongst one another over intellectual property -- watch, the day will come, mark my words) Sooner or later it will be impossible to identify somebody online anyway (unless they specificaly choose to identify themselves to you) so all of this will end up being futile.

In the last decade, there have been huge technological changes resulting from the common placement of the microprocessor. These changes are very recent and the consequences are yet to be fully realized, understood, and dealt with. During any change there comes a point of dissarray, and we are nearing the worst of it (the drop of the economy marked the beginning), and hence seeing these crazy laws come up. There those against the change (MPAA) and those who embrace it. If evolution has taught us anything, its that change is inevitable, and those who don't change just die. (hence this "war" will no doubt be the MPAA's undoing, just think about the implications of what they are doing -- war against their own customers, the very hands that feed them)

Nah I don't expect any chaos that we haven't already seen, no matter which way things go. But, so far as government...kinda apples and oranges here. ET doesn't have a "bill of rights", and the prime minister, if you will, (/me pokes martin) has absolute power here  . In the case of our government, the end result could end up being bad, but if its that bad, it won't last.

What you are suggesting is that if enough people want a specific thing, then it ends up becoming the law, no matter what the constitution says. Such may be the case, but if a law like that is so well desired, and everybody wants to abide by it, then they wouldn't feel opressed by it would they? Hence what the government does thus far, and again supporting the idea that they are not all about taking rights away (go ask yoder or miranda).

Hell I don't know why a lot of people complain anyways, half of the population never bothers to vote, therefore rejecting their opportunity to make changes. (the elderly and wealthy people vote more than the rest)

sigh.. who is saying that they WILL stand?.. nobody.. we all agree on this being ridiculous.. it could happen but it won't work in the long run and if they even got close to what they want it.. it would still mean kaos on the net.. and not any kind of order.. just like it's allways been.. organised kaos..

i'm also not saying that they are looking at a list of laws on a computer and pressing delete on the ones they don't like :p.. what i'm saying is that if a law is rewritten or taken back or whatever.. it's not the person with leverage that makes it happen.. it's the goverment.. how ever ununited it is and full of diferent opinions.. what matters to the ppl is the end result.. if a law is written that alphawolf is not aloud to post in ET anymore.. you could most probably get pissed of at the one who came up with the idea to vote for the law.. but to actually do something about it.. you must be a bit more grown up and look past that and look at the whole picture.. the ET goverment so to say that actually made the change.. not the one who came up with "lets ban AlphaWolf".. right?.. it's the end result that matters.. if you go listening to every litle new thing they go thru in the goverment chosing new laws for you.. you'll notice there's a alot more going on then you need to know.. what matters is the end result.. wich is only decided by the whole goverment.. although it don't often all agree on the same thing :p.. if you go and get yourself into deep with this b4 it even actually starts getting anywhere.. your selling yourself to the media more than you need to do :p..
