What's new

athlon 64 speeds (frame rates, etc)

I am considering the upgrade from a 2.6 gigaherz pentium 4 with Hyper Threading to a 3800+ athlon 64,,,but, first, I would much like to have an idea of what to expect on the side of dreamcast emulation, frame rate wise...I've heard a few people tell me that they can hit 60+fps in a few games...But, I am still somewhat disbelieving that claim...So, if you happen to have an athlon 64, post the specs of it, and a few sample frame rates you get in games...etc...Pictures would be awesome...Much appreciation to those who help me in my final decision to go this route...

I have an Ahtlon XP 3000+, and I can get full speed on games.

The version of Chankast they are working on right now also has a lot lower requirements then the current version. I would post pictures, if it wasn't 1:30 AM and I was about to go to bed.

Believe me, that is a really big jump. You should notice really nice improvements. Chankast seems to run faster on Athlon systems to boot. I get 60+ FPS in Soul Caliber in most stages with just a 3200+, and a 3800+ is much, much faster.

starting to look better and better to me...especially along with the fact that it destroys pentiums in the ability to play games like hard drivin and cruisin usa on mame!

I only wonder what an FX 55 would do if I decided to go that high...though it would cost much much more...Might be a bit of overkill considering pc gaming is the least of what I do..I am strictly console emulation all the way...

If you can really afford it, then go for it, the FX-55 is the best processor available, but is not significantly faster than the older 3800+ (which is equivalent to an FX-51) and is about $300 more.

im pretty particular about what I want the speed to be within, pertaining to this new pc...Pretty much want dreamcast as a given, n64 (which hardly needs anything anyways...but doesnt hurt to have such a dedicated processor for it), sega saturn (I believe this would work as well as dreamcast, games like panzer dragoon would probably do extremely well in the new environment)...psx (yet another one that hardly needs anything to run well, but again..doesnt hurt)...and, of course, my precious mame and model 2 arcade emulations...I specifically want hard drivin, race drivin, carnevil, and lost world jurassic park to run better within mame...apparently athlon 64 can do that for me...and, model 2, I am not sure how well athlon 64 can handle those yet...noone has told me anything of it...but it would definitely rock to be able to play those light speed as well...

My P4 3.2C @ 3.70 runs games in Chankast just fine, most are unplayable due to being TOO fast.. but yeah, a 3800+ would rip it to shreds. :p

Chankast rocks ^^
I'm usign an AMD Athlon 2400+ XP with a GeForce 2 64MB and 256MB of RAM, and I almost get 60fps stable usually.

im surprised i waited so long to go the athlon route...the benchmarks for even mame are based on the 3200+ athlon 64, and those are much better than many of the pentium ones...thanks a lot for all of the replies...I would still love to see a few photos of the athlon 64 in action, for any of you guys who have one...fps of any game on chankast you can think of presenting to me...the store that has the athlon opens shortly...I am finding it harder and harder to hold back from going out to buy me up one of those monster athlons...heh...

Athlon XP 3000+ "Barton" and FX 5200 here and Chankast runs perfect (have it in its own partition along with UT2K4). While you might get nice FPS..it wont fix the sometimes slowdowns and sound issues..'cause its the emu. Rememeber..it still in alpha stages so dont expect to run all the games perfect (from last update they decrease memory requirements and improve speed..so hopefully that will decrease the requirements). However..having that system doesnt hurt either for future GC/PS2/XBOX emus :)

model2 will not run much faster afaik, because mostly it seems to be a prob of the emu, but a little speed boost all your emus will get.

well i've got mine just under 3800+ speeds at the moment, its damn nippy, but to be honest the frame rate isn't that much faster than at stock speeds, theres only around 10-15FPS difference, but it runs much quicker than it did on my old athlon xps

well, just got home with the computer and set it up...and, i must say it is better than i even expected...just doing light testing now, but so far, hard drivin for mame ran past 60fps...:) never thought id see that happen...lol...as for model 2...a new emulator for that was released recently which plays all of the games full speed...so you can get by with a standard intel or athlon for that one...there is a special option in the emu that when enabled makes every game run so damned fast...:)

another thing I noticed was when I go to load games, they instantly work, unlike on my pentium where with chds youd always have to wait several seconds for the emulator to read the files...I loaded Carnevil within a second...and got steady 60fps...

overall, every single thing I tested is running more than 2 times faster than my 2.6 gigahertz...in fact, when carnevil goes through the intro with the menacing clown, it barely runs 1-3 fps for over a minute before you can play the game...it sticks to past 100 for me now...

I am also not certain the fps is accurate for chankast..since many games appear much faster than their fps shows up as...

model 2 emulation also plays flawlessly for me now...

Like I said I to got a new pc athlon 64 3400+ and games run too fast. I really really hope that in the next version of the emu it will have some sort frame limiter.

well now i have both an athlon 64, and a pentium 4...ill keep both..since one is great for gaming, and the other is good for multitasking...lol...

i'm about to get an athlon 64 3500+ and oc it a bit past 3800+ speeds(it'll be a newcastle core, but i hope i can get it to at least 2.5ghz).

do any of you guys know which memory is good for overclocking? i'm thinking of getting a pair of pqi dual chan turbo mems that have the 2.5 latency

i wouldn't recommend the newcastle for overclocking, the winchester 3500+ overclocks a bit better and can probably get past 3800+ speeds

crucial ballistix is highly recommended for overclocking, if my memory was better i could probably get an even better overclock :)

soul calibur=fps average of 120! simply amazing to me considering not even a 3.8 gigahertz pentium can get nearly a third of that speed...

I have an Athlon-64 3800+, and the only game I've tried that even approaches a below-normal frame rate is Soul Calibur. Everything else is well above normal.
What the Chankast team have done is very impressive, considering that there are some SNES emulators that struggle for full speed.
