What's new
  • Most issues reported these days stem from users not enabling their emulators to use the required amount of RAM.
We also tend not to use the search feature but post our issues within the texture pack release page.
Failure to load a texture pack should not be posted in the release thread unless you have already patched the emulator.

If you don't have the resources to use Large/HD texture packs please do not attempt to do so.
Users should have a minimum amount of System RAM not less then 4GB's.
If you have less then 4GB's of RAM do not post about how your emulator crashes,
RAM is dirt cheap so invest some money into your PC.

I would like to say thanks to squall_leonhart
    for posting this Solution.

Those pesky OoT backgrounds

I  CANNOT:angry: for the life of me figure out how to dump the static background textures. I get every other texture on screen, can see the dumps in the folders, have even used the numbering program to number them but the background to the shop in Kokiri Village remains unaltered.

I see the numbers on the textures when I hit pause and it flashes the background before going to the menu but when I'm actually in game there's no alteration whatsoever to the static image behind everyone.

I've poured over the boards here trying to figure it out with no luck. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? :(

If you run it from the start and still aren't getting a result, I can hardly tell. Textures only dump when they are loaded, so you should always do it before you start the game. Those pre-rendered indoor areas in OoT are always a little testsy, and there aren't many packs that change them at all.

Yeah, I'm definitely doing it before I start the game. Like I said, I get every other texture, even pieces of what appears to be the background I'm looking for. Evenstill, the changed files aren't showing up when loaded.

@simonel - Thanks, I'll try focusing my searches towards that, see if I can't come up with anything.

Welp...what I found...short answer...you can't change them. Unless someone's figured a work around.

It seems the issue is one of two things:

1. The backgrounds are prerendered and punch you in the junk whenever you attempt to retexture them.

2. Quoted from some thread: "Currently you can't see a 320x240 image replacement in game (but you can have the dump). It's a limitation (volunteer or involuntary) in the Rice plugin..."

If you know otherwise, let me know, I'd love to texture :(

Are you talking about the overhead texture? AFAIK, those cannot be done, but the regular ones can. I've done it before. Just hit the dump textures box outside of the building, then enter, and walk around the building. You should get everything dumped

What I'm attempting to work on is the backgrounds within the shops. I was going to start with this one. Can this be retextured?

  1. Use this Glide version for dumping the backgrounds.
  2. Use afterwards HighResEaser Option 1 for marking the background textures
  3. Note the order of the marked textures
  4. Arrange the background tiles in PhotoShop with HighResEaser Option 2
  5. Paint your new Background in the Layer over the arranged textures
  6. Slice your new background and save the slices under the proper names by using HighResEaser Option 3
That should do the trick. :king:

Here you find a statement from Gonetz explaining the reason for the background problems with Rice.

Hey, thanks a lot microdev. I'll give that a go in 8 hours or so (stupid work :( ).

One quick question though, once the proper textures are dumped and edited, should Rice's plugin load it or will I need to use Glide in order to play the game as well?

As Gonetz explained, the backgrounds in OoT are rendered through a high-level macro call. In the Rice plugin, this macro call is emulated by simply loading the whole background image w/o checking for a high-res replacement first. He simply forgot to take care of this special case.

So, yes, if you want to enjoy high-res backgrounds in OoT you have to use Glide. (if mudlord didn't change this behavior in Rice in the mean time)
