Usage of the word "American"

Something that sometime bothers me is the usage of the word "american" that the people of USA give. They just say "we are Americans", some people even say that if yo are not from USA you are not american, people like me can also say that we are american.
I'm not trying to offend nobody with this thread, I just want to see the opinion of you guys in this mather. IMHO is very selfish for people of USA say that
they are Americans and no else it is. I remember that I was arguing with a friend of mine who visited here and she said "In my country we have a different way of think than here because we are american"
As I said IMO that is a very selfifh expression. I know that probably I'm gonna be flamed withthis thread (specially if someone here from USA is very patriotic) but I just wanna start something interesting to talk with you guys...

Well, we're the United States of America. What else are we supposed to call ourselves? The unitedians? Statians?
There's no other country that I can think of in North or South America with "America" in it, so I don't see the problem.

Yes its a very selfish expression. It's also very sterotypical. I dont know anyone that says that. Probably less than 1% of the United States population believes this and the ones that do are the self centered morons that exist in EVERY country, including Costa Rica, Brazil, USA, Canada, and well everywhere. In the US and Canada we are North Americans which we can say that you arent cause (unless I'm mistaken) Costa Rica is a part of central america, and of course Brazil is in south america. Yes we all know you are Americans, we dont try to deny that.

No way! I think that hell has frozen!

It's just another one of those PC things which I care nothing about.

When somebody says "american," most people immediately think of the US. Although it's technically incorrect, why should it be a crime to think this way?

BTW, you "americans" get offended when we call you "gringos" ?

Personally, I could care less. A common mistake that many people seem to make about "americans" though, is that ethnicity here is very unspecific. Although the US started as a british colony, the "majority" ethnicity (anglo, caucasion, white, or whatever the hell the politically correct term you want here) is only 30% of the total population, which is rapidly decreasing.

The "United States" is just that...a bunch of states that are united into one nation-state, under one cause, under one constitution. This is not the classic definition of a country. Honestly, the closest term I have ever seen to describe us is the word "yankee," but that doesn't work for everybody here either (especially those in the south.) Therefore, the only word that you can really use is the word that identifies the general region we are in: America.

You see, confusing us with the English again. ;)

/me waits for a reply from blizz :p

I personally believe that the term "American" is a bit incorrect if you really want to get REALLY technical. You might as well call us by what state we live in...like where i live, Californian...or rather caliPORNian! :p But calling us American has been a term used to mean that people in the USA are US citizens.

Meh i usually call most people from europe, europian anyways, unless they are from eastern europe :p (i love those romanians!)...(dont call me a romanian cracka!)
