I am trying to network together two computers using windows XP home. I am using a Linksys router and two generic network cards. I am not able to make the computers see each other. Can anyone give me a could walkthrough of how to make it work, and as many suggestions as possible.

Thanks

There should be a wizard you can run from within "my network places", find it and run it

?????????????????????????
According to m$ tutorial:
Control panel-->network-whatever-->network guide
Follow the instructions, make a disk or use the xp cd.
Go to the other computer, run the guide off the disk or the xp cd.

And just follow the instructions.

I have run througth the network wizard on both computers. At one point I had one computer seeing itself and the other computer. However it could not connect to the other computer. Currently both computers can see themselves but cannot see each other.

Both computers are runnning XP Home. Do I still need to make a networking disk? If not, do you have any other suggestions of how to get them to see each other.

you should just be able to type "\\pc's name\SharedDocs" in windows explorer

or go windows explorer, my network places, entire network, microsoft windows network, mshome (unless you set it as a different name)

I have tried:

or go windows explorer, my network places, entire network, microsoft windows network, mshome (unless you set it as a different name)

I was not able to find the other computer. I was only able to see myself.

Should I assign the computers definite IP addresses or let them make their own. (The router supports DHCP)

the linksys routers assign 192.168.1.100, 101, 102 etc as their ips..

you should be able to see it though, not sure what's goin on there.. and you shouldnt have to do make a floppy or any of that stuff as long as they both have xp (or even 2k) installed..

try method one.. \\otherpcname\\SharedDocs

Make sure that both computers have the same thing in the workgroup box. There really is minimal effort in getting the computers to see each other.

Now I'm having a similar problem...

I have a RCA cable modem connected into the 4th port of a 4 port hub, a 98 machine in the second port, and my XP home SP 1 into the 1st port. Both computers can see themselfes but not each other. and only the 98 maching is succesufully using the internet.

I've tried running the wizards, and they should work, but I guess they just don't want to be nice to me or LoanRaven.

I tried "\\Brandonn\\SharedDocs" with no luck, and the folder is shared. I also ran "ipconfig" and entered the found info manually into XP, but that didn't work.

Do I need to give the computers diffrent ips somehow? Or what other information could I provide to help someone solve this mystery?
