even more...

When the stories of overheating boxes first hit the press most gamers figured that the console's massive power brick was responsible. It turns out that the entire device is a power-hungry monster that consumes more than twice the amount of power that its predecessor did. The website tested the X360 console, using Extech's MA200 power meter, which gives real-time power consumption results. They discovered that the console draws out 160 Watts compared to the 74 needed by the original XBox and the 50 by PS2. The console was found to need more power than most living room electronics including the JVC RX-D702 A/V receiver, the Denon DVD-3910 DVD player, and a DirecTV HD TiVo. The only living room device that needs more power is a big screen HD TV which you, most probably, would be using with the console.

In practical terms the news is important because it gives you some perspective as to the dollar amount you will need to spend in order to keep your monster running. If you average four hours of gaming a day you will be consuming 233 kilowatt-hours per year which can cost you anything from USD 10 to USD 35 a year, depending on where you live (wow some areas really have expensive electricity).

This news, of course, is unlikely to interest most gamers who are not known for their environmental sensitivities but it's another interesting bit of information to come out today regarding the console

heh, i thought console developers had learned from their mistakes when PS2 came out with bugs. Hmm, perhaps they did learn...

Nah, Sony just knows that the Japanese aren't as sue-happy as Americans.

Thus, as long as they keep launching systems & other hardwhere in Asia first, everything will be cool by the time they launch it State-side. :D

Good observation. Although, I've never heard of anyone getting sued for a malfunctioning console.

This does not sound good for them at all, especially considering that with this going on a huge chunk of second shipment 360's are going to end up going to people who got 1'st shipment 360's that were defective.. the shortage lives on, and microsoft keeps diggin that hole, but if anyone has enough money to climb out of it its them.

I wish Sega had that kind of budget when they had the dreamcast on the market, would have been great to see it used to a true end of its life instead of the ill fated *ohe noes ps2* *run away* *pee pants* fiasco that all sega fans had to bare witness to *hides face in shame* :bye3:

To this day I cringe whenever I look to a game box.. see sonics smirking spikey blue haird self.. and an Xbox/GC/PS2 logo rests at the top.

All new consoles that come out always has bugs..........Thats why I'm patient and wait till they make the next model......And by then the price will be cheaper as well......Microsoft rushed the console for Christmas Dollars!! I expect similiar issues with the P3 so you ppl out there should wait....

Never buy the first model of any console!!!!!!

I would say Ms is at fault. Sure enough, they must test a new console before releasing it. And if they HAVE done it properly, then why does these issues occour? Because they somewhere in the line did something WRONG, like switching out parts or maybe putting in different parts for different regions which they, of course, have NOT TESTED.

No console should get these issued when being launched. And if they do, it should be as little as possible. And I guess that the machine screams for power, very easily overheadting the HUGE power supply. When it does not contain any fans, what it to expect? A computer draws more power, but it has FANS to make sure nothing overheats.

Maybe in perfect ville USA, but we live in the real world, consoles as well as any other hardware are subject to "lemon syndrome" in which no matter how hard you test something, no matter how good it sounds on paper anything that can, will go wrong.

Its really hard to compare this directly to a PC, yes a PC has fans but a PC isnt playing games 100% of its time used. A pc also comes within that big shiny metal box sitting next to your desk called a tower, this leaves you (or the manufacturer) PLENTY of room for properly spaceing components as well as placeing several fans/other cooling methods. The Xbox360 however is not a pc, it is a console a piece of machinery designed to play video games, all of that power crammed into that tiny case they really dont have many options when it comes to cooling. One step microsoft took infact to combat heat issues was placeing the power supply OUTSIDE of the console, that is why you are left with that huge ghost buster-esque power brick, however I can agree that the cooling of the PSU should have taken a higher priority than it did considering that 90% of the gameing populous has little to no knowledge of the hardware they use, its not all to uncommon for them to just plop this power brick onto their carpet and think nothing of it.

MMh, if I remember correctly not ALL of the new consoles have/had bugs...
The PS2 and the both Xboxes had some (really annoying) problems, but the NGC never had!

Good point, the gamecube didnt' have any problems that I know of. I guess Nintendo knows how to make their stuff.

Isn't that what companies test for? To make such issues does not exist? Sometimes when I play something, or use something, I see something that shouldn't be there and I think: "How can they how missed this? It's so obvious it shouldn't really be there!"
I guess this whole reason is because Microsoft rushed out the console before christmas... But still. If you used testers for all regions, for all the different consoles used, Microsoft would undoubtedly find this problem. Or perhaps they DID find it, but ignored it because of lack of time?

As for the pc, remember that the cooling is most needed when playing games - not when using it for general use (okay, maybe some exceptions like video encoding).
And as for the xbox, I ask you: would you rather have a console that kept overheating or a console that would be as big as a computer? I would say the latter, as long as I can play my games. Besides that, the playstation 2 isn't overheating, the gamecube isn't overheating. So then, what does that tell us? Microsoft obviously hasn't done good enough to create a functional console.

Now just for the fun of it...

RUMOR: The pop diva Madonna trashed her free Xbox 360 in a Japanese dumpster, according to the her blog page. (Unconfirmed whether this is truly her blog page.)

Xbox 360 Degrees! [Posted on Dec 6, 2005 http://madonnasthoughts.blogspot.com/]

I received my FREE Xbox 360 yesterday! Too bad though. The thing over-heated and doesn't work. I was going to play a game with my friends in Japan, but it crashed on us. The power supply on this device is HUGE! At least I know why they called it the Xbox 360 and not the Xbox 2. The damn thing gets up to about 360 DEGREES!!!! It's frightening!
Oh well. My Xbox 360 is in a Japanese dumpster. I just don't have time to fool with getting it replaced. I'm not much into TV or video games anyways. My children aren't allowed to play them either. I guess they were dumb to give me one knowing that I don't really have any use for them. I know they gave them to other celebrities as well. Paris Hilton got one. Barf. That's even more reason to trash the glitchy console!

from "the magic box", does it overheat too?
