I know I should use the edit button but I would like to give some insight on my newest situation. apparently if I put more then one device on a single ide channel, both of them seems to f*ck up. if I just put one on a channel at a time it works fine. plus, I have put the drive with iwndows 2000 on the primary channel and the drive with xp on the secondary ide channel. no CD-ROm is attached now. I was just gonna go that route and have 2000 boot so I can attaempt to fix xp. but the xp drive doesnt show in My computer yet it shows up in the system devices panel. does this all constitute having the computer replaced? if so ive got to make some major changes to the case since I have warped it a bit to fit a couple cards. ;)

1) Yes, 2k supports NTFS.
2) Suppose it's "hidden." You could try some way of unhiding it...I'm not sure of this.

Just a thought

To my knowledge xp does have startup disks available for download
theres one set for home and a differnt for pro i think they use floppy disks to work . i have never used them . but i did download them a long time ago from microsoft website or bootdisk.com im not sure which.
maybe you could try and see if that might have the tools you need .
this is just a suggestion, and may not be of any help
or fix your pc , Liteuser

well, all I need to get the fix working at this point is the recovery console or dos ntfs access at best. the fix is just comprised of replacing a couple files with old versions. its just that they are sitting in the system folder which is heavily protected by the ntfs file system.
