Windows madness

?????????????????????????
Okay, just, let's see... three issues here? Think you can help me a bit? >_<

First issue is Windows Media Player - although some might not like it; I find no problems with it and it is my main media player. However, recently it doesn't work. I tried to uninstall it and windows media technologies or whatever it is called, then terminated the uninstall process for both when prompted to reboot. Now I can't even reinstall it. And I don't understand WHY. Each time I try, I get an error message saying something about an incorrect version of Windows or something. Like the player wasn't supported on this language version of Windows. However, I've tried the english and the swedish with same results, so that can't be the problem.

Second issue is DirectX. Currently I have DirectX 8.1 after using an uninstaller to re-aquire the default version of DirectX that came with XP. Thing is, I can't install DirectX 9c. It simply... succeeds? When I run the installation, it starts to install, then suddenly it says that the installation suceeded. However, if I go into dxdiag, I still see that the dx version is 8.1. I tried to install DirectX9 (not 9c), and it worked fine! However, I need 9b or 9c. And preferbly the dev runtime of 9c (which I have, but won't install, like the retail one). WEIRDNESS OVERWHELMING! Stupid microsoft >_<

Third issue... well... How do you get the f***ing system restore to work?! It has never worked for me. I tried every single system restore point that had been created, and what do I get? FAILURE! It says that computer can't be restored to that point. The system restore might have solved some issues, had it worked!, but I disabled the stupid thing so it doesn't suck up space for no end when it never works. Does it work for any of you?

Wow, that is really bad...have you tried reformatting? I've had trouble with installing directX9.0c, but I figured out that this program I had that changed the boot screen picture when the computer started caused the problem (I think it was called logon ui boot randomizer) So I disabled it, and I was able to install 9.0c. I would check to see if you have any programs similar to this, but the other problems your having I don't know what is wrong with them. Try checking for spyware, adware, and trojans if you can, but other than that a clean reformat might do the trick.
Well, theres my 2 cents :p Minkster

No, Don't reformat. Just reinstall windows. There's no reason to reformat and lose everything.

Lose everything? I sadi format the windows partition. I guess Doomulation has some partitions where he could backup something he needed in the windows partition? And you can't make a decente Windows installations if you don't format

Just Another Wacko ;)
Bah, just reinstall Service Pack 2 (or 1). This will fix everything and won't actually change any settings or mess with the latest windows updates. Plus, you won't have to format or reinstall Windows or something. :)

I know it's long overdue for a reinstall, but I don't want to do it.
Ah, reinstalling sp2 fixed the DirectX problem, but not the windows media one...
There also appears to be something wrong with DirectShow, as some players (like Nero) fails to play files correctly at times (only happens to music). Ah well.
Still dunno about system restore; I can't be bothered with that crap.

No idea what is wrong with your system restore - personally I'd delete what is in there, turn it off and then back on.

Touch wood, I've never had a restore point fail on me yet.

I don't use system restore. I always disable it. I prefer to reformat if there's a serious problem and save HDD space
