Wait, your actually serious about creating your own firewall!?
Acutally I am :)

tho this is not a personal project, it is my day job .. we were meant to buying the code for outpost but that fell through, did buy another one which is a really crap UI and not user friendly at all .. so I am rebuilding the UI at the moment. I think they want a version out to market in about 3-4 months time

you might get a message like this:

Zilmar firewall has prevented "kilL_pROjEcT_64.exe" from accessing "C:\Program Files\Project64 1.6\" and has detected 4 other insignificant viruses on your computer.

or if its like McAfee, you might get something like this:

Zilmar firewall has prevented "firefox.exe" from accessing the internet because you might go somewhere where you could get something that could hurt your computer

(that was a bash on McAfee)

but seroiusly, its bad to have multiple firewalls running, because they will block eachother. I had a AV war between Norton and McAfee. That was fun to watch. My system lagged up, then I had to disable McAfee, and kill McAfee because I like Norton better.

I use (When on Windows) Sygate Personal plus a hardware firewall on my ADSL router. Although the Sygate hasn't been updated for a long time it's atleast better than ZoneAlarm.

And on linux i don't have any firewall, since to my knowledge i don't need one ;)

Sygate was recently bought by Norton & has since been discontinued. That sucks, because I used to use Sygate too, it has always been my favorite firewall.

Ah, so that's why you're asking... free market research! ;-)

Do you use a firewall on your PC? If so which one and what do you like/dislike about it.

I use a firewall on my router only (D-link DI-624 wireless g). It's good, works well, nice admin interface. I've been able to configure everything (games, Trillian, torrents, RDC) to work with it by port forwarding.

The only problem I hated about it was the UPnP was wonky and seemed unreliable. It turns out the problem was on my end, because XP would sometimes recognize the UPnP connection and sometimes not... a quick network setup wizard fixed that.

Good: nice readable logs, can enable/disable UPnP, can dis/allow ping
Bad: if UPnP does not work

used to use Sygate, which i think stopped being free, then Kerio, which also seems less free than it was..
currently just using router, gave up on software firewalls as causing too many issues (slowdown, networking hassles).
touch wood been fine without.
the only time i start a firewall now is when i want to stop something calling out. but many firewalls cannot be turned on and off properly easily so this is a hassle aswell.

edit: P.S. i would not touch zone alarm or anything by norton. although they may be better now.
anyone got advice on current best freeware for non commercial use windows firewall? (Besides zilwall, which naturally, if it existed, i'd have to use ;)

The view that I am taking is other then it might take me beyond the initial release to really get in is that inbound protection while needed is not that important any more. Dialup you use to get your own IP and were a lot more vunerable. These days people connect to broadband and there router gets the IP address, they are just using NAT to connect to the net. This gives a great deal of security already.

What we see as more important is outbound connections. What apps are doing something you want to block, where are you going that is dangerous. Working at an app level and target traffic that is where we see things are important.

Okay but can you recommend a security combo for me 'cause I'm getting Norton Systemworks 2006 next week and it's gonna be one hell of a security war in my computer.

I use Sygate Firewall.
Windows firewall is full of security leaks, Norton isn't customizable enough and it can block applications even if you let them through.
