What's new

Windows 98

Actually, both sound more like user errors than bugs in XP. For directx I think you can just use the repair options. Don't know about the networking stuff.

For me. XP doesn't assign the interrupts right for my network card and one of the mother board resources. It swaps them and my network card won't talk to the network. Win98 SE works fine. I've tried new BIOS for the mother board and Linksys doesn't have XP drivers for the network card. So I use Win98 SE untill they fix these things.

Well...another example of what XP bugs there are.
The OS does not crash. Still, there are many things that it does not do right. That's what I mean with stable, but buggy.

the problem with XP is that its very complicated, you can't see properly what's going on. Hence, I use Win2k, which is pretty much the same as XP without all the fluff. The backwards compat. is even lower though, but that's never been a problem for me even though I have all sorts of old hardware. It's Wery Goot.

I hate some stuff about Windows XP, arrrhh

I have the following issues with Windows XP that I don't have with Windows 98 SE, otherwise, OK:

I have to put my Voodoo 3 in to install Windows XP,
then reinsert my GeForce 2 MX 200 video card AFTER Windows XP
was successfully installed. With the GeForce 2 MX 200, if attempting to install Windows XP, Windows XP Setup will
lock up crash at "Setup is starting Windows" !!!!!!

I began ramdomly getting the thread stuck in device driver
and driver got stuck in a loop crashes!!!!!!

Microsoft is beginning to tick me off!!!!!!

RJA, that problem is a BIOS issue. So either try installing XP without ACPI, or install it with your Voodoo3 card in, then flash your BIOS.

What make of motherboard do you have anyways, I assume it is something based on the KT133a chipset?

Trotterwatch,

First off, if it was ACPI related, Windows XP would fail to stand by
and lock up crash, but I'm not having that issue. The ACPI seems
to be OK.

My motherboard is a:

Soyo SY-K7VTA-B, which has the Via KT133 chipset.

And, Soyo does not have such a BIOS flash,
hello!!!!!! I wish they did!!!!!!

I already flashed the BIOS back in 2001, the year I
got the motherboard, and that was for other issues
of the following:

processor default voltage (Vcore value)
And before the BIOS flash, I would have to select the Vcore value
in BIOS to -0.025V , otherwise the system would lockup crash
(everything just freezes, including the mouse pointer) no matter
what I was doing, even just sitting idle every approximately 15
to 30 minutes. And let me tell you one thing about that, I almost
sent my motherboard and processor back for a refund, because
no matter what, it kept on freezing within approximately only
30 minutes.

Also, before the BIOS flash, I was unable to overclock the processor at all,
even when I unlocked the multiplier!!! The PC would fail to POST and sometimes Voice Doctor will
mumble the voice "The processor might be damaged or not
installed properly" (!!!!!!) that was bull**** , the processor was not damaged!!!!!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The major Windows XP Setup video card init issue is pretty much
all Microsoft's fault!!!!!!

Actually from what I have heard it only affects nVidia cards on specific mobo's/chipsets.

Well,

I was not having a mean attitude, but Microsoft is ticking me off!!!

I never, ever had the problems mentioned above with Windows 98 SE.

But despite the compatibility features and setting the compatibility setting to Windows 98/ME compatibility mode,

with Viper Racing, the audio still bleepin' crackles!!!!!!

And all's OK audio related with Viper Racing in Windows 98 SE.

And more majorly worse, the game, Driver's music keeps
on repeating the first sample, just like a broken record!!!!!!

Even when the Driver CD ROM is not damaged!!!!!!

The music is OK in Windows 98 SE.

It's more Windows bugs galore!!!!!!

Thanks a lot, Microsoft!!!!!!

Hey dude, you're not alone!
You don't just realize what XP does for me!

Whenever I start an app, it complains about out of memory or won't start apps! The only way is to close that program first! Sometimes, when you have both explorer and that app open, it won't change directory... but that's just one of all problems XP makes for me

...so you're not alone!
Thanks, Microsoft!

I must be one of the lucky ones then, absoloutely no major problems with XP. The only crashes (system locking) that I have experienced were all due to a chronically overheating CPU, with another fan though I haven't had a crash since :)

it's unbelievable, but WinXP is the only OS from MS (no, this is not a joke :) ) that didn't cause me (till now, at least :satisfied ) 'major issues' :D...
Well, this is quite subjective, I suppose...

To prove how stable is, once on accident I opened over 200 Outlook Express windows (don't ask), at the same time I also had several other apps loaded.

Windows didn't crash, in fact it warned me before I opened them, that I was attempting to open such a large amount of files. It opened them all, afterwards it told me I was about to run out of memory and closed down a couple of the windows (less than 10) in order to keep the system stable.

I was pretty impressed by that :) Especially when you consider I only have 384 ram.

Sure XP isn't perfect, but I have noticed a tendency (and I don't count any of this threads posters in this statement) to blame XP for everything. For example, on the GTA3 forums there are many people unable to get the game to run properly, logic dictates to these people that it must be XP to blame (despite people using Win98 reporting the exact same problems).

I do agree

I do have a issue and interaction with Windows XP with
McAfee Virus Scan 6.02 with WinAce. The issue does not occur
with McAfee Virus Scan VShield disabled:

When loading a large archive, (200MB+), Windows XP
will slow down to a crawl, the Windows XP pagefile
thrashes for 3 mins. and then the McAfee Virus Scan
shield module, McShield crashes with
"Mcshield has generated error and will be closed by Windows",
then Windows is responsive and the HDD stops thrashing,
and Windows XP does not crash.

Well,
now, when I try to play any game at 640x480,
the screen becomes strange and streches out so that you cannot see what is over and below the middle of it.

Thanks, XP!

You must have something wrong with your drivers then, you can't blame user error continuously on XP.

Fix your monitor settings or something, because this is definately not an XP specific issue.

Well, AFAIK there is a problem of refresh rate with winXP and Geforce series (at least, Geforce 2, I dont know if this is for GF4, too). Well, if this is the problem, the centering of the screen results also different, and U could try to download Nvidia Refresh rate fix (for me it worked ;) ), i dont know from where, but I think from nvidia.com or something similar it should be found.

Well, this is all that comes to my mind
