Who the feck is Rodney?

I've received a particular phone call repeatedly over the past couple of months. They always want to speak with Rodney (I am not Rodney). The caller id is of no help; it flags the call as "Unknown Name," which is a bit odd. Most telemarketing calls are flagged as "Unknown Caller." I spoke to some woman at length a while ago and explained that I was not Rodney, that I don't know Rodney, and that the address she thought she was calling was not mine. Things quieted down for a while, but recently the calls began again. I would normally ignore them, assuming they were more bs (unrelated to the previous bs), but I decided to answer today.

Is Rodney there?

I was rather coarse with her, and explained things yet again. In my frustration though I forgot to ask where she was calling from. She said she would remove my number from their database...

Somebody named rodney probably signed up for a contest or something, and accidently wrote your number on a sweepstakes card. Whenever you sign up for any of these, you can damn sure guarentee that your number will be whored by telemarketers.

(then again, in the US this will be illegal starting next month)

Probably a pranker. Me and a mate pranked someone and asked for 'Stuart' to the point of them having the change their number. The number was 771234, but I'm not saying the area code, and even if someone did ring it, it would be blank. Looking back it was pretty tight, but hey I was about 11. :/

No, I'm reasonably sure it's not a prank. I suspect it's a bill collector; just has that feel to me.

There is a system over here that is suppose to stop telemarketers. If your number is registered they are not allowed to call you, however this means shit to them. When I worked for a shitty company doing telesales we rang out of the bloody phone book

If anyone complained you either tell them the system is down and you can't find if they are on the system or not, or apologise and say you will remove their name from the system. So yeah expect more calls Rodney

Hmm...well, that loophole doesn't exist here. Whether they know you are on the list or not, if they call you, they get fined $1000 per violation, and you can also sue them. The law specificaly makes it their responsibility to know...if their "system" was down, then they just don't call anybody.

Maybe you like to talk to telemarketers or something when you get lonely, but we just don't do that here. It's mostly the fact that they try to sell you crap and don't quit calling you when you say "hell no". Your only other choice is to unplug the phone, but what if somebody you actualy want to talk to calls? Hence the new law.

In my case, if you want to sell me something, send it through the mail. They may bitch about jobs being lost, but the truth of the matter is, these days they have a stupid recording call you. If they send it through the mail, it keeps the post office in business (and they could use more of that these days), and creates even more jobs than telemarketing does. Also if I don't want something you sent me, I have no problem just throwing it in the recycle bin, and unlike telemarketing, when you find out I am realy not interested, you'll quit because it actualy costs you decent money.

Ahh, I see. I've never had a recorded voice phone me up...
It's usually people from like Trinidad or Afghanistan which I can't understand and I never have the heart to tell them to fuck off. I only do that if it's an Englishman/woman on the phone.
