My grandparents had a Commodore 128, but my first computer was an AT&T 8086. It had a green monochrome screen, a whoppin' 1 MB MTM Hard drive (1 MB was pretty big for MTM HDs), and a 5 1/4 low density floppy drive. Had no mouse and a keyboard that resembled a laptop. It did however have a mouse port on the back of the keyboard but I never got the mouse itself.

It WAS a computer. It used an old style BASIC language though. That was back in the day when programming languages were different for each machine you got on, so BASIC on a commodore wasn't the same as BASIC on a PC (then called an IBM or IBM compatible) or any other machine. Unfortunately, though it was intended for more, most people used them as gaming machines. Now a days you can learn to program C++ on Windows and program it with only a few differences on Linux or Mac.

Hmmm...well IcePir8 has me beat with the Sinclair, but my first was the same as his second .. a TRS80 Model 3. Used a cassette tape drive and had no hard drive if I remember correctly. You loaded everything to RAM off the tape drive. Took forever, and I think the RAM was 16mbit or something. That was seventh grade. I was green with envy when my best friend got an Atari 400.

I also had an Apple 512 but I didn't buy another "computer" until the early 90's when I got a 386. Followed by a 486 notebook, then skipped to a PIII 450, then my current Athlon 1700. I try to keep it on a four year rotation, although having built the last one myself I'll probably be less strict about that from now on.

Of course the real geezers can tell you all about loading and storing data with punchcards. Back in about '78 I got to tour one of the IRS' regional headquarters ... computer nirvana at the time. The walls of the main room were lined with huge reel to reel tape drives, and area beneath the floor was packed ... and I mean packed ... with wiring. Even now it would be impressive to look at but I doubt they had more actual computing power than a 1st year model PC.

My first was in 1981 TRS-80 Color Computer 4kb (not MB) of ram, I saved my programs on cassette tape.

My second was in 1982 Apple ][+ 48kb of ram and a 128kb floppy drive

get out of my house
no way going on holiday is the best way to stay computer free. even in the summer when i was home i hardly touched the thing. once school starts though, its like a frigging magnet that pulls and never lets go unless you have to go to the toilet. or when your counterstrike key messes up and refuses to work

Yeah, the exact same happened to me when my motherboard died, i was without a computer for a few months (minus the mighty family comps which are powerful as hell but i cant install games on them :() I couldn't deal with it, the only thing keeping me sane was my Dreamcast and it's 200+ games. :)

Its just not having it at all that drives me crazy. I dont spend all day on it, but these school computers have limited capabilities and I cant do hardly anything on them. Its just having no permanent storage for files I'm working on, and having to walk to the PC lab, and not having the software I need that drives me absolutely nuts. Especially when it comes time to do C++ homework.
