Finally a tech question I can help with, Yeah!!!

Personally if you have an Amiga 3000/4000 handy with a Toaster, go that route and don't turn back. :) If just IBM compat keep reading

I like TMPGEnc for encoding to MPEG-2. If you plan to not use them on a VCD or SVCD you can encode with Divx which makes some pretty nice files.

I guess though it really boils down to what type of video you have to begin with.

The question is which video compression filter to use. And which settings. I've never really compressed video before....

Google for xvid. Koepi has the current best encoder.

Then go to forum.doom9.org and they will cure your headaches from trying to figure out all the options. :)

Oh, and if you are specifically trying for 1 CD movies, go for 2-pass. Twice as long to encode, but better quality at low file sizes.

pretty silly, but that forum is down now. Which means i can't get help with those options...i'll try later, though. Do you know/recommend anything to use?

EDIT: I got it working, but everytime I run the second pass, it seems to fail somehow :plain:
I got a tutorial, though...and i didn't change anything besides putting the quality to mpeg...weird that it should fail!

EDIT2: Once again status update. It seems that one pass with this xvid compresses worse than divx just one pass. Hmmm...

EDIT3: No matter. I used DivX to achieve great results. A movie originally 230 mb was compressed to about 120 mb.
