vBulletin 3.0.0 Gamma Released

Today. I just received the e-mail from vBulletin. Might upgrade later, but I would have to pay the $30 yearly member area access fee to get hold of it. We have an owned license so we can run vBulletin as long as we wish, but must pay $30 a year to be able to download new versions. Anyway, how do you like the look of it:

Your opinion is important. I could either pay the $30 yearly member area access fee now or wait. Perhaps wait until vBulletin 3.0.0 goes gold. But on the other hand, if you like this new design (and features I guess) it could be my christmas gift to all of you. :p

It has a nice look. The horizontal-style postbit is a bit weird at first, but it grows on you.

The truth though, is that it doesn't seem that much different from what we're using now (on the surface anyway), so I'm content to wait. It's your money my friend, spend it as you will. :)

I'd have to say the current version is fine too, and so maybe waiting isn't a bad option. Unless that is you believe the yearly access fee is something you would get more usage out of (ie it will allow you to get other upgrades early).

No need, im with the wait and see'ers. If u do wanna upgrade having extra time to look at it sfeatures cant hurt either.

A question,

BTW, I know vBulletin is stable, but why use it if you're required to cough up money (vBulletin= the Micro$oft of message board software :( )

Alternatives that I know of are the following:

PHPBB:

http://phpbb.com

OpenBB

http://openbb.com

The two don't even cost a penny and when I tested PHPBB on my web server,
especially with PHPBB 2.0.4, it was fast and stable, possibly faster than vBulletin.

?????????????????????????
PhpBB = bad functionality. Far less than vBulletin...
if any other messageboard or forum than vBulletin, it's invision or ikonboard methinks. But vBulletin is fine...although it is a friggin' money hog (I'd never pay to use this forum !!!)

I like the pop-up menus, but that's about it. Definitely not worthy of an annual 30 bucks payment.

Actually, yeah, PHPBB don't have file attachment support. Sorry about that :(.
But, I tested it with Xitami and it's fast. Invision, I haven't tried that one, but it looks like that one is fast too. OpenBB does have file attachment support.

Invision is the best free message board software.
It's nothing on VBulletin though...

Ohh and also, I don't think at this time it's worth upgrading, Martin.
Not worth $30 just yet...
Well not $30 of my money.
Depends if you feel like spending $30 i suppose.

Yes. If I pay $30 now I can download free upgrades for a year from this date.

Isn't there a lifetime one?
There used to be.
Wouldn't it be better to pay lifetime instead?
Or have they gone uber-money crazy now? :O

Umm...

We have an owned license so we can run vBulletin as long as we wish

== lifetime license. That's just the license to be able to use it though.

Yea, take your money and buy b33r instead. Besides, threads take long enough to scroll thru (dahm j00 with the tall sig's) without the horizontal info thing.
