The whole point of a court of law giving a punishment to a criminal is well, to punish him. The death penalty is just the ultimate punishment.

That is one way to frame it, another is to say that the point of a court of law is to protect the society, in which case life imprisonment without parole is the ultimate protection becuase if evidence is found to prove a person's innocence later on, the error can be somewhat corrected, although I doubt this particular person is innocent

I serve GOD, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit, all who believe are "my people" and "my countrymen".

With that said though I am also bound to live the way we must with human laws and views on the world.

So if the guys was giving information that in any way, shape, or form could have gotten someone else hurt or killed, that is no better then hiring someone to kill someone for you. It should carry all the same penalties.

If it was simply giving away "secrets", well to me that's no different then giving Campbell's exact recipe on soups to Libby's. Figure out a good punishment to fit the crime. ;)

If Justice is not Revenge the punishment didn't have to be equal to the crime : it's not a revenge, not the Talion law. Justice is done for the good of the Society and Society must act in better way than criminals and respect the principles it etablished, i mean the respect of Life.

Anyone else here ever seen the original Star Trek episode "Dagger of
the Mind" ? Great episode about prisons and morality and stuff...

"The're not cages anymore, Bones. The're clean institutions for the sick minds of
society." (I don't think that's the exact quote)

Anyway, about the people who mention religion. Religion has literally nothing to do
with punishment (I think it has nothing to do with anything, has served its purpose and
should be avoided by all costs by any intelligent being, but that's another debate...),
it's about the people deciding how to punish someone for something they find wrong.
(The accused might even disagree, like that animal cruelty BS... again another
debate).

But since he's in the military, he ought to just be shot and that be the
end of it.
