Trouble with controls.

Hi,
I recently got the n64 emulator and am having trouble controling the games. I got a pc controller yesterday too, thought it might help but it doesn't. For example the analogue stick doesnt work at 45 degrees. Only up, down, right and left are the working directions. This can be frustrating since the characters don't really run in straight lines in certain directions. Anyone know how to fix this? I can't find anything on the controller configuration.

Tried calibrating the controller in Game Controllers in the Control Panel?

The controller is fine on other games, calibrated fine. It's just project64 in the controls section only lets you input "up, down, right or left". How can I input it to move the character north east east for example without running awquard.
