Get an Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 motherboard. It supports most of the newest AMD CPU's, has built in LAN, built in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, USB 2.0, Firewire, and SerialATA.

An AthlonXP 2000+ can be found for around $75.

For video, get either a Radeon9500-9700 or a Geforce4 TI series card.

A nice 100GB Western Digital hard drive can be found for about $100.

512MB DDR RAM can be found pretty cheap too, just check Pricewatch for that.

Transfer your old DVD drive, floppy drive, and monitor over, and you have yourself a nice system.

WOW  A Proccessor that cheap? just a couple questions. do you know of any mobo's that have onboard audio and video and support that proccessor? and does that proccessor work with 98SE ?

If you want onboard video, look for an nForce2 IGP board. They have a GeForce4 MX 440 onboard, IIRC. It's the best onboard gfx there is. Otherwise, go for the A7N8X Deluxe. and get a better video card. As for if it runs 98SE, well, I'll be able to answer your question by the middle of next week. :)

EDIT: Go here and take a look at my new PC. Everything all together comes to slightly over $1000, although several parts I got used. Lets just say that you can get a top-of-the-line machine, with 19" monitor, for around $1600 today. Contrast that with the uber-systems of 6 years ago that cost $2500.

NewEgg currently has their AIUHB-stepping Athlon XP 2100+s for $93. I've heard with the right cooling (which I ordered) you can overclock those babies to a 2600+, easy. I'm kinda broke right now, so I'm going for 2400+. Can't afford killing the CPU. :p

 why would you want onboard video? if you're want a gaming comp, you really shouldn't get onboard video... it's just yucky.

Gfx card

Try to get a Radeon 9500 PRO for ur gfx subsystem, I just bought this card its quite awesome!! Splinter Cell looks EXQUISITE! This card is also pretty cheap, at least it was where i bought it, bout 10 pounds more expensive than the geforce4 ti4200 8x, but considering the fact that it gives performance inbetween the 4400 and 4600 with the Catalyst v2.5 drivers, i think the extra is worth it!

Well, main reason is, im stuck with onboard video and audio now. and getting a new mobo and cpu would probably be all I can afford, so id be stuck without any video.

Make sure you get a nice keyboard + mouse + monitor + chair. Most important parts ;)

Cherry G83 keyboard rulez da world :)

It maybe don't have (useless) multimedia buttons, but i've bought my in 1995 and it still works like new. Even keyboard-killer KOF and Street Fighter games can't hurt it :)

U can get something like Voodoo Bahshee, TNT1 (or TNT2 M64) for <$15 or GF1 for $15-$20. It's maybe not enough for UT2K3 but works ok with older games and all emulators.

Floppy drive ? And get $2 for it ? Or less. New FDD is about $5 :)

get either the MSI K7N2G-L or the EPoX EP-8RGA+ for a good board with integrated graphics plus you can upgrade on it later with a free agp slot.

I'm using the Asus A7S333, its very nice but I dont use the onboard sound it comes with as for video, you really dont want onboard video. Trust me. You can get a nice Geforce 4 MX cheap and it would be better than onboard.

how does the i845/850 onboard sound rate with the audigy and stuff? i've NEVER bought a seperate soundcard:D and none of my friends have either..am i missing something?? i mean i feel im getting pretty decent sound quality with no distortion and stuff....oh and i have a 2.1 speaker system so if audigy is only good for surround its no good for me:(

mesman00

What's that...?
audigy makes a difference, trust me. i used to have onboard video and though it sounded good. then in my new comp at school i put in an audigy xgamer. well, when i went back home and listened to music on the computer w/ onboard sound, i could tell a huge difference. so yes, it does actually make a difference.

It depends on which chipset & board you are talking about. Most onboard sound sucks compared to the sblive except for the nForce2 onboard sound which imo is superior.

Hehehe

And on the 9500 Pro, once you turn on AA and AF it kicks the crap out of the Ti4600 :D

I strongly recommend a 9500 Pro... they can be found at Xtreme Gear for $165 OEM or $188 Retail. I got one of the OEM cards - it's a Sapphire red PCB with an ATi sticker, so it's basically built by ATi :D
