BTW, I have been seeing horror stories about Windows XP SP2. It seems that Microsoft just caused more compatibility problems. First off, Sygate Personal Firewall with Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP1 probably is better than Windows Firewall, in Windows XP SP2. It sucks that Microsoft decided to put a limit on max half-open connections, a measly 10 connection limit, which you can't change without literally hacking tcpip.sys. I dunno if that limit affects HTTP servers.

BTW, I did hear directly from one person I knew back in 2002, saying that a person he knows ended up having someone install Windows 2000, because after probably some minor hardware changes, at least not a whole system, AFAIK, ended up getting told that the person was required to purchase another license!!! Windows XP displayed a message about it not liking the license.

That was probably with a laptop PC.

Whilst I do think that 10 connections was too low a limit, I can see their reasons for doing so. It's not something I would castigate them for to be honest. As for breaking compat with programs, AFAIK a lot was done for security reasons. Either Microsoft fixed the probs, or they just left them to exist.

As for the licence thing - to be honest 1 person doesn't count as horror stories, more like a horror 'story' And now you mention it as being a 2K problem, when AFAIK 2K didn't even have this activation system.

At the end of the day, this person was running a pirate copy no doubt and was caught with his pants down so to speak.

RJARRRPCGP reads way too many horror stories, the only way to be sure is to try it yourself, and if you have a perfectly legal copy of XP you have nothing to worry about, if you don't then, guess you deserve everything you get then, plus nobody is fecking forcing you to install SP2.

You believe everything , aren't you ? If Windows XP doesn't like the license , he should crack it away , instead of wasting money for a new license .

I think you understood your friend a little bit wrong , i never heard any story of that kind anyways . If you legally bought it , it's unlikely that it refuses the license !

unlike SP1, SP2 does not check for pirated XP keys, so there should be NO reason for anyone to not install SP2. looks like MS wants everyone to fix their security holes. and a good idea too.

Or why didn't he phone Microsoft customer support who contrary to popular belief are actually very good, at would have sorted it out lickety split. Of course they ain't that favourable to pirated versions
