For the past 4 months this installation has failed. How can I get it to install? I have all the latest critical updates installed, but it still fails. Any Ideas anyone? Thanks-minkster

There is a hidden folder called WUTemp in the C:\ (or whatever drive is root), if i remember correctly, that contains the downloaded updates - try running the file from that directory instead of the windows update site. It could be corrupt or something. If so, delete it and redownload.

I didn't use any Cd-keys or whatnot since I bought this laptop that came with Windows Xp home installed with it (it even has the windows authentication seal thingy on it). I will try what sethmcdoogle stated and tell you what happens Thanks-minkster

I tried searching up the WUTemp folder and I couldn't find that it even existed, even under the hidden files that I searched I couldn't find the folder. I did find WUTemp in my D: drive. Still no luck :(

You might also download the network installation of it as I did... or order an SP2 cd. That makes sure you have it downloaded at least... is it the download or install that fails?

It is the download that fails....like two seconds into the download it says it failed.

i suggest downloading the install file manually (not using windows update), and then running that. it is a 266 MB download, but you can either burn it to a CD or slipstream onto a windows XP CD so you will never have to download it again.

btw are you behind any proxy or university gateway? i had a problem with my university network, where they were caching MS updates on their servers, except the caching servers were down. Attempting to download would consistently transfer superfast to 20% and then fail. I had to complain before they fixed the server =P.

The Background Intelligent Service was already on and I'm behing a router if that helps. I am able to download other windows updates so I dont think its my connection to the internet.

I'm installing the file manually....The CD-burner on my computer doesn't really work that well. Is there a way to just install it from the exe file? Thanks-minkster

Yes, you just run the .exe file to install it, that is the normal way. :) i was just suggesting how you could avoid having to download it in the future.

Ahh new problem. I get this error now....
But for some reason it was extracting to my D: drive rather than my C: drive and I have no clue why. Is it supposed to extract there? Thanks-minkster
EDIT: I just did a Google search and found that the program LogonUIbootrandomizer is causing this error. Sorry for the inconvience...I will update if installation is successful.

Finally, the installation was successful...the only problem I have now is that my computer somehow locked itself after I uninstalled LogonUIbootrandomizer. Does anyone know how to unlock a computer because even though I type in my password, it shows up every time I log on/off or restart the computer. Thanks-minkster

You are right, if the cause was a blacklisted product key, it usually would give you a message that's explicit, explicitly telling you about the fact of the product key being invalid and suggest to call an anti-piracy hotline.

NOT a stupid vague message that just tells you that it failed. Thus a file probably is corrupted.

Lol well now I got it fixed by downloading the latest version of StyleXp. They had an option to change login screens and fixed the annoying password thing. Thanks alot for everyone that helped :)
