Sony's PSP concept pics

I have a Sony Discman that comfortably does 40+ hours on two AA batteries. And that Discman is well over a year old now, so I'm sure they have figured out ways to run them even better now.

Still I hope they manage to run this at a low battery cost, that will be the clincher if they can.

Would be nicer to have it built in like the PSP will. Less accessories to carry around. Hell, the GBA doesn't even include a headphone jack for christs sake; just plain nuts if you ask me.

GBA does. GBA-SP doesn't, due to PCB space. Live with it.

The discs it has look like miniDVDs in a cartridge, perhapse it will be possible to rip your movie if its small enough, or if its too big, compress it to MP4, since the PSP will be supporting it. Even if it does use a proprietary video format, thats nothing that some reverse engineering or modding couldn't fix.

Hell, this thing already does more than the gamecube :D

They aren't miniDVD's, they're "UMD".

And even if you were right, your method is literally saying "HEY LETS TEACH THEM TO PIRATE DVDS SO THEY CAN WATCH THEM ON PSP!"

Meh, they were just being cheap bastards. PCB space my left ass cheek.

What are you talking about? They wouldn't have to teach anybody anything, nor would they have to imply it either, if they are selling special discs that is.

What's wrong with ripping "your movie" as he put it, from a DVD that you own to a UMD? It might be difficult considering the PSP can't record UMDs, but if you can get a USB accessory that does the trick, then I'd be all for it... and if it's illegal to transfer your CD's to cassettes, make mixed CDs from ones that you already own or videotape TV shows, then I guess the Feds will come and throw me (and everyone else I know) in jail.

Many more pics of this thing, with comparision to other things as GBA and controllers etc...check it out:

[edit] Just noticed that its just a paper cutout of it...shouldve looked better at the pics before posting, still I guess the size comparision applies...[/edit]

It doesnt look that big at all, at least when you compare it to the normal GBA...

About Nintendo not having headphone jack on the SP, yeah theyre just cheap imo :bounce:

I don't remember the thread, but we discussed GBA-SP's lack of a headphone port already, and I more or less showed that there wasn't enough space on the PCB for a headphone port.

I suppose if they changed all of the trace routes and added an extra PCB layer, they could do it, but hell, let's make them sell it at $150 for one headphone port, why don't we...

PSP Features:
- PSX-quality 3D gaming
- watch movies
- play music
- basic PDA functions
- future phone/TV capabilities
- wireless internet

GBA Features:
- SNES-quality 2D gaming

With those specs, I think it can do a little bit better than PSX quality. Try Dreamcast/PS2 3D quality. :D

It's slightly more powerful than the original PSX (with more disk space), but nowhere near Dreamcast/PS2. As long as they can port the best PSX games (and hopefully enhance them slightly) to the PSP I'll be happy.

I remember that thread, and you didn't show anything. The fact is that they had plenty of room, and it would have cost them at most a whopping 10 cents extra per unit to add that port.

It probaly didn't strike them as essential, there is plenty of space and cost really shouldn't be that much of an issue considering what it is... Even Nintendo makes mistakes... :p

not really, if you sell a lot of GBASP's that's a hell of a lot of 10 cents, plus you get to sell a dongle and make more money as well (SEGA did it with the DC too, by putting cheapo modems in the later models)

they're a bit of a bastid aren't they really, what with being a profit making company and all ;)

As discussed in that thread, PCB space amounts to more than just 'space on the edge to mount the port'. Jeeze, this is the next best thing to gravedigging...

Edit: And to route traces, they'd need another layer on the PCB, which does increase costs quite a bit for a device like this.

No it does not, thats what surface mount is for.

That pretty much sums it up, they just wanted to make more money. Theres nothing wrong with that, but IMO its a lousy way to earn a buck.
