I hope im not posting something that is already discussed, but some (concept) images of sony's PSP was reveiled today...

I think it looks kinda cool, although it can't possibly be any comfortable. Will be interesting to see how much battery life it will have though, as it has a optical disc drive, and that screen looks huge :teehee:

edit:
fixing spellies as usual ;)

Mr. Super Clever
The device in the top right corner is the PSP Universal Media Disc (UMD), a DVD-like dual-layer medium offering 1.8GB of storage. UMD comes with DVD-style region coding and copy-protection mechanism based on the Advanced Encryption System (AES). Each disc has a unique ID number too.

Sony has already said that the PSP will be powered by a 90nm processor built from a MIPS 32-bit R4000 core. The chip will feature a SIMD vector processing engine along the lines of Intel's SSE 2 and PowerPC's AltiVec. It will feature 8MB of embedded memory clocked to 333MHz and operating at 1.2V. The memory bandwidth is quoted as 2.6GBps.

A second MIPS R4000 core will be used as the basis for the PSP's media engine, with 2MB of embedded DRAM, and again fabbed at 90nm.

Alongside these two chips will sit two dedicated graphics processors, one for high-level graphics manipulation, the other for the raw pixel shunting. This second core contains 2MB of embedded video memory operating across a 256-bit 5.3GBps bus. It can deliver a fill rate of 664 million pixels per second in 24-bit colour and churn out 33 million polygons per second with transform and lighting effects.

The PSP will feature Dolby 7.1 multi-channel audio, with 3D sound. It will support MP3, AAC and Sony's own ATRAC3 sound formats. It uses AVC (H.264) and MPEG4 for video. The machine's UMD media can hold up to two hours' of DVD-quality video or four hours 'standard' quality, whatever that is. Either way, movies are displayed on the unit's 4.5in 16:9 widescreen ratio 480 x 272-pixel LCD, seen here.

One of the key features of the PSP is 802.11b wireless networking for multi-player gaming. However, speaking at a news conference yesterday, Kutaragi said Sony will at some point add phone facilities, bringing the device even more into line with Nokia's console-cum-phone N-Gage.

Now let's all wave bye bye to Nintendo

That Damn Good
Even though it's way more powerful than any handheld, nobody will want to pay more than $200 for the psp.

Starts waving, unless Nintendo counters with something good the handheld era will start to fade when people start to realize that why settle for 2d when you can have it all?

well they've pulled something interesting out of the bag at Sony, it's still a bit fugly but I'm sure they'll work out the bugs,

Now who's placing bets for an FF7 remake at launch?

interface indeed looks fugly. tho the features are out of question of course. nintendo would probably be able to pull a bitch like that if they werent so conservative in terms of company policy.

That looks good... I don't think it would be too uncomfortable in the way of button position and stuff.

I just hope it has a good enough battery life to go along with all the other nice features...

Nice!!!! I knew the features/specs were mind-blowing and now it looks like it's also the perfect size! I'd definately pay well over $200 for the PSP... I mean the portable DVD players can go for $500+. I paid $200 for a portable CD player when they first came out... and I think the PSP is just slightly better :)

That's just plainly stupid...
$200 for a handheld is too much imo.
This thing might be a monster, but it lacks in battery power. How much power would it drain?! Lots! This thing will probably cost like hell when it hits the market and hence the gba will still be fairly popular. Besides, nintendo has dominated the market for a long time and that would make people still get the gba...
Besides that, nintendo is making money as hell on the gba i would think and could easily counter sony with something if need be.
The psp is going down sooner or later.

The PSP has so much fuctionality that it's a joke to compare it to current handheld gaming systems. And to price it at $150-$200 isn't out of the question considering how much money they can make off the software... more people that buy one (even if it's below cost like the XBox) the more they can make off the software.

PSP Features:
- PSX-quality 3D gaming
- watch movies
- play music
- basic PDA functions
- future phone/TV capabilities
- wireless internet

GBA Features:
- SNES-quality 2D gaming

Still it's expensive as hell and draws battery power as hell. Those factors are what stands in its way atm.

um...the gba has been out for a while now. its just stupid to compare a recently announded device to one thats been out for a few years. thats like comparing a gamecube to a snes.

im sure nintendo will be able to pull something out in the years until this thing is released.

I think it looks pretty cool, although it's of course just a prototype still. I think I'll wait a little about ordering that MP3 player I had in mind. ;)

Would be nicer to have it built in like the PSP will. Less accessories to carry around. Hell, the GBA doesn't even include a headphone jack for christs sake; just plain nuts if you ask me.

The discs it has look like miniDVDs in a cartridge, perhapse it will be possible to rip your movie if its small enough, or if its too big, compress it to MP4, since the PSP will be supporting it. Even if it does use a proprietary video format, thats nothing that some reverse engineering or modding couldn't fix.

Hell, this thing already does more than the gamecube :D

sony would be advised well to figure out a battery saving way to run that cd drive. i wouldnt make the mistake of not trusting them to do it.
