yah there is a similiar history to the shield of Chile and the same with the swedish Göteborg shield.. it was used in battles etc (not that the swedish had that many battles).. carried around on special occasions.. they too used them as flags back then.. but more by the "military" 
.. as in knights and kings and so on..
but it never overtook the place of the actual country flag.. the shield and the flag are known to be used in diferent ocasions.. but both represent your country.. i guess you guys never had a shield but your flag looks alot like most european countries shield.. so that's what looks kind of funny about it.. but it's a nice flag.. or shield (ok ok.. standard) ..
then again you guys might have a shield too.. i haven't checked.. btw.. is this way off topic or what? lol..
