Ok like.. I'm not asking for roms or anything here but really just asking a simple question.. I'm new to dolphin and just wanted to know if I have to insert a GameCube Game disc of my own into my cd rom drive or do I have to download some sort of gamecube emulator file to play games on Dolphin Emulator?

K thanks for clearin' that up for me.

Thanks Toasty :flowers:

Captain Blade: Just read the readme/help files which come with the dolphin installer and read the rules of this board. It will cover most of your basic questions.

I didn't break any rules, did I?

I only asked which thing I need to do: if I need to download games or if I need to use the disc that I own.

If my question is not supposed to be asked in the forums then answer my question in a pm or on msn?

The help file and readme did not help me.

I didn't say you broke the rules; I said to read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). The very first question there states:
Q: How do I use my legally owned GC discs?
A: You can't, these GC discs aren't compatible with your DVD drive. There won't be support for it in future.

Okay. Well in that case I will try google.

Google doesn't seem to help though, meh.

What thats soo fucking stupid, everybody here is useless in the way they can find the energy to tell you what to do. rather they waste it with spam and posting a link to a 2year FAQ.

dude telling a person how to use dolphin isn't illegal. to play your gamecube games you have to run the PSO exploit to stream to gamecube to PC first. as dolphin doesn't support a plugin to active read the disc from a DVD drive. As gamecube writes it disc's from out to in, at a 32 byte alignmenst, little endian.

anyway you may also wish to just download your game from torrent, it'll be easier then modding your cube to play games off PC.

If you plan to mod your cube to be able to copy games off NGC checkout this site, it has everything you'll need.

The FAQ is there for a REASON. They contain the VERY answer to that very QUESTION. And that FAQ should have been READ before even posting!

What you don't seem to get is that certain techniques or methods are illegal or in the grey zone and modchips are ILLEGAL in some countries, which is why we do not post instructions on how to get around this.
Furthermore, GC discs CANNOT be read be PC DVD drives, because they are INCOMPATIBLE. They were not made to be read in DVD drives.

for exampel, here in germany you would never find a modchip cause they are something like banned ( :( )

Yea i understand that, some countries have banned modchips, that's why i told him there are 2 alternate methods.

i don't think your country can arrest you for doing the PSO trick on your g-cube. but there those crasy ass countries out there, that have nutty laws.

why are you soo up tight about me trying to help the guy out, not like you wrote the FAQ.. another thing he's asking for clarification after reading the FAQ, he didn't understand some of the terms from the FAQ, and you fucking tell him to read the FAQ again, thats what it's for.. shit Doomulation that's fucked man

To answer your question simply, you will need to load a GameCube Game Disc Image (a .GCM file) into the Dolphin emulator. You can either rip these files from GameCube Game Discs that you own, or find some place on the Internet to download them from. Under the rules, that's all I can say about the subject. I hope that answered your question.

For more information about why you can't read a GameCube Game Disc in a standard optical drive, read on.

Standard optical drives are not designed to read GameCube Game Discs.

Very often I have heard this story:
Standard optical discs are written with the data beginning on the inside of the disc and ending on the outside of the disc. Here's a rough visual example:

As such, standard CD/DVD drives are designed to read from the inside of the disc to the outside. GameCube discs, however, are written with the data beginning on the outside of the disc and ending on the inside of the disc.

However, I have also come across this:

Contrary to popular belief, GameCube discs are not physically read any differently from a standard DVD disc, but are encrypted with a key derived from the Burst Cutting Area, a 'bar code' unreadable by most DVD drives. This move was intended to prevent unauthorised copying of GCN titles
- Nintendo GameCube - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Either way, the only two optical drives designed to read GameCube Game Discs are the one in the GameCube and the one in the Wii. I hope that this is helpful to someone!

Ok, you've completely repeated what I just said a few posts back.. only in green print.

though, you used better english then me, and i thank you on your extremely well written response. I also lightly touched base on why a DVDreader can't read the leadin, cause there's no leading at the first read sector, being the disc's are written backwards. I had no clue though that that weird strip was an actual encrypted thing, i figured it was a manufacturer stamp/barcode.

You're missing the point. Captain Blade did apparently NOT read the FAQ before posting and therefore, some nice members pointed to the FAQ so that Captain Blade could read it. It contains lot of useful information.
If someone does not understand the FAQ and thus posts about it, of course we will help.
I was attacking you because you're doing exactly what you should not do. We do not discuss how to rip games because of legality issues. Yes, go read the FAQ. It specifically says that you should not ask on how to rip isos from GC games. And that doesn't mean you should tell either. "Google is your friend" was added for a reason.

Is this reason enough?

"I was attacking you"

Dude come online XBL and play me in H2 if your gonna do that, this chitter chatter and you attacking me, is quite annoying.

maybe you could find something else to talk about, besides feeding your boredom by upholding these petty forum rules.

i'm getting sick of hearing about WAREZ (sharing copyrighted material) I got a nasty letter from the ESA once (electronic software association) they basically seek out and sue people's asses off for pirating software.

anyway they monitor stuff you download, and they flagged me for downloading something off edonkey.. my ISP informed me, and sent a huge legal letter..
anyway the item i was flagged for, were some Japaneses mag scans, that contained the title Xenosaga in it. So if you ask me this whole defending of programmers is bullshit, after that nasty letter from the ESA I totally believe in WAREZ now!! not like I ever, or am going to ever pirate a whole bunch of gamecube games, cause i'm on dailup for one.. but still I hate how everything is soo WAREZ sensitive now.

aww crap went off on a HUGE tagent.. software, cool, money grabbing sometimes leads to evil. anyway Doomulation, no hard feelings man, i'll leave the moderating to you

You can't play a torrent file. IMO, this thread needs locking before anymore controversial pointers crop up. The original question has been answered hasn't it? You can't read Gamecube discs on your CD/DVD drive; you need an ISO/GCM file. As for acquiring them, you're on your own.
