here's mine (I have dual display with 2 different video card (specs bellow) , that why its like that, and the left dektop is in 800X600 and the right one in 1280X960. the black part is nothing

I use Print Screen key, then paste into Paint.

This may be a stupid question but ..... how do I take a snpshot of my desktop

Use print screen(on the keyboard usually top right) when u have the desktop in view, and paste into any image editing program like paint or whatever(open paint-->edit menu-->paste or just ctrl+v)

Not sure, but it's MS copyrighted so a good guess would be off the WMP9 page...

Press Printscreen, then open microsoft paint and press CTRL+V.
