Saved by my PC case screw!

I was just fiddling with settings in my BIOS and generally doing stuff I'm not supposed to do, when I selected an option my computer restarted and made very unhealthy beeping noices and failed to show anything on screen at all - wouldn't boot or anything.

I panicked and though my comp was done for and I'd have to pay for expensive repairs. As a last ditch effort to save my comp, I opened my motherboard manual and it just happened to open on a page about resetting the CMOS to default. I thought 'that's it!' but I read that I had to connect to (very small) jumpers on my mainboard to do it. Still not really knowing what I was doing at all, I looked around for a conductor of some kind, and after trying a teaspoon (didn't work) I tried my PC case side panel screw. Holding it on the two tiny connectors, I turned on my comp.

Lo and behold, my computer booted up! I was so relieved!

I'm such a n00b! :p

You could have just removed the battery. ;)

Glad you saved yourself, now stop playing with grown-up stuff. :p

I don't mind doing that stuff if I mess up. But my newer motherboard (Asus P4P800) resets itself if I accidentally overclock it too much, or do some random stupid thing in my bios. Asus is smart. :)

My motherboard done the same thing when I overclocked it, and I removed the battery and all the settings were put back to the factory default.

Most new motherboards do that. I dont think I can possibly ruin my CPU with this mainboard, unless I really try to. If I clock so high it can't start it shuts down and goes into safe mode (heavy underclock). If I overclock too much but it still runs it will shut down if it gets too warm and so on.

It's getting easier and easier being a PC user nowadays...

Haha. Yep. ;)

And I've heard others call you a guru. :D Hehe, first time for everything.

My Jetway mobo does that too Modem.. if I oc too high, or if it won't boot, it somehow detects that and resets to previous settings. Sweet. :) I used to have to reset the bios via jumper like Clements did with my all my other boards (even a newer socket A board :D).
