Ok, I'm just gathering info here... err, well sorta.
Anyway, refraction just told me that he had 6 SATA HDs which all broke in a period of 2 months! Now that's scary O_O
I was just wondering, has this happend to someone else or are these drives... safe?

They're manufactured by a lot of different manufacturers, so I highly doubt they aren't safe.

Refraction might have:
1) Bad electronics in his pc which causes them to fry (? guessing)
2) Bought all from bad batches
3) Or even one hell of an unlucky streak.

There's a couple more possibilities, one is what is called "dirty power", where the voltage on the line fluctuates, which can cause many problems in a pc, mostly with powersupplies though, and since you said this only happened with sata drives, not pata drives you've had before, then it is more likely that you have inadequate cooling in your pc, you may want to try spacing out your drives so that they are not up against one another if you have more than one, as well as making sure that you have good airflow inside your case, in particular, check the front intake fan to make sure that the vent isn't covered over with dust or hair, if all else fails you could try picking up some harddrive coolers.

Hmm, pure bad luck then eh? Phew, makes one easier at mind :p Maybe the sata drives are just a little more "touchy" than ide. I might as well test sata next time.

SATA drives are IDE, for some reason dumb people everywhere think they are different, instead of realizing that the distinction is between SATA(Serial ATA) and PATA(Parallel ATA)

no, PATA drives are IDE, not SATA

IDE = Integrated Drive Electronics
ATA = AT Atatchment
AT = Advanced Technolodgy(back in the 80's anyways)

Now, IDE and ATA can often be used interchangably as they refer to the drives innards, PATA and SATA are merely descriptors including the interface type, one parallel, the other serial.

What is my point? SATA drives are IDE drives, just like PATA drives are, just becuase every retailor from here to hell disagrees does not change that indisputable fact.

poor mal, as to doom's question problem, there is another possibility, your PSU might be providing too much, or too little voltage for your hdd, which would ideally be 5v +-0.5v
