Running Dolphin x64 on VMWare - Problems!

I installed VMWare Workstation 6 on my Vista x32 and installed XP x64 on VMWare to play Dolphin x64.

However, when I start SSBM on Dolphin, the game lags my laptop like crazy and my mouse starts jittering, freezing for certain time periods too. The framerate stays around 0.5-4 FPS, but the screen never changes (it's always black). I'm eventually forced to end the task via Task Manager.

My Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 (2x 1.80GHz)
1406MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 6100 Go

I have both cores and 768MB of RAM dedicated to VMWare. I have Dual Core and Dynarec enabled in Dolphin. I have also applied the Direct3D Enable Patch for VMWare, so there isn't anything I'm missing.

What can the problem be (I'm assuming it's that I'm running it on VMWare)?

You can only install a 64-bit guest OS on a 64-bit host operating system else severe performance problems will occur because it has to emulate the 64-bit functions.

I got to ask WTF are you trying to get Dolphin working in VMware? VMware doesn't include proper support for Graphics and only uses a crappy emulated card so it is highly unlikely you'll ever get any games to work or work at decent speeds.

You might as well forgetting to try to run it in VMware because it's very unlikely you'll get anything to work or get any kind of playable speed.

If you got a 64-bit processor, just dual boot that way it can access the graphics card and doesn't run in a slow emulated OS. You'll see about a 10 - 25 increase in FPS not running it through an emulated OS.

Also I hate to bust it to you but your system is hardly adequate for playing most games in Dolphin, so don't expect anything higher than 30 FPS with most games running about 10 - 15 or 20 FPS even with Dolphin x64 Dual Core.

Also Dolphin is not ready to play Gamecube games on yet as many/most games are still incompatible with only a handful of games either able to get ingame or be fully playable.;)

I have to agree with Xtreme2damax. Dolphin barely runs well on real hardware, let alone through yet another layer of emulation. If you can even get it to work on VMware (I highly doubt that you can, given the weak graphics support you get with PC emulators), I'd expect it to be around 10 times slower than if you just dual-boot and run it on your real computer. What was the point of using VMware when you have a real 64-bit processor sitting right in front of you??

Lol, well, I was too lazy to go through the dualbooting process (seeing as I already had VMWare installed and I still needed to split up partitions to dualboot and stuff).

But anyways, I ended up dualbooting in the end, and needless to say, SSBM runs fantastically. I have to AA it up a bit to make it slower and playable, but other than that, it's awesome.

Thanks.

Glad it worked out for ya. Super Smash Brothers runs great here too, but try to play other games like Windwaker or anything a bit more graphics intensive and you'll see a hefty speed decrease.

VMware is not optimal for running anything emulation related. VMware even has problems running PC games and it's emulated Video Card lacks any kind of Pixel Shader emulation.

I was just trying to help you out that a dual boot would of been much better/optimal given I can set a dual boot configuration up in a matter of half an hour with my XP/Vista cd/dvd and EasyBCD.

Good luck! :)

Yep, I agree with you now. Seeing the improvement of efficiency with dualbooting rather then emulating on VMWare, I'd take dualbooting any day.

Thanks for the help!
