Roms fun in emulation, not on the real thing.

I wanted to get anybody else's experience of roms that are fun in emulation, that absolutely suck on the console.

Here's why: Monopoly 64 is great in emulation, but horrible on the console. The console goes so slowly that I can never finish a game. It is quite playable in 1964, though, just hit the + sign about four times, and the game runs silky smooth and fast, and is very enjoyable.

I was wondering if anyone else had some experiences like this.

thanks

A lot of RPGs are more fun emulated for me. Simply because, for example Mario RPG - I can speed the game up. At one point you become so powerful that all lower level enemies are dispensed simply by tapping the action button.

I don't consider that to be cheating, just time saving :)

Perfect example. I don't really like RPGs though.... *sigh*, but yeah, I can see how that'd be more fun. Have you tried monopoly sped up? IMHO it's the best version out of that game after the + key a couple of times. :D

The decent one
Yeah, most RPGs are much better when using an emu which supports frameskip or speed-up (Chrono Trigger, Dragonball Z & Pokemon Silver were the ultimate experience), but sometimes fighting games are also better by speeding them up or slowing them down (DBZ: Hyper Dimension could be much more spectacular with a speed boost of 20-30%, but slowing the game down could also be useful to create combos).

Perfectly agreed. I play many RPGs and I have to say, sometimes I speed up when there isnt much to look at, or you are doing something you knows thats going on. IE. watching the magic effects on seiken densetsu 3 or on bahamut lagoon.

I would agree with you all the way. When playing a games such as pokemon games or some other gameboy games using visual boy advance is far better than playing on a regular gameboy because of the speed key. I also prefer emulated games because you can make their graphics better using different filters. One other thing I can think of that is better is the turbo keys you can set.

I've played it very little. Though I may give it another go now using the speedup feature :)

Yep, the speed up option is the classic resource for a better gaming. Very useful. I played chrono cross, mario rpg, final fantasy and another games only because of the "turbo mode". I played RPGs only a little in consoles. The unique game i finished in consoles is the Zelda fo SNES.

There's a myriad of reasons for using emulation over consoles in my opinion. I could never go back to an actual console at this point. However, this thread is about specific titles that are not even worth playing on the console that are great to play in 1964, or pj64. Monopoly 64 fits this bill perfectly for me, as does Virtual Chess. :D

These games would both be a blast to play online, too, probably, if anyone's interested, I'm usually online about 1 AM pacific time. ;D

I'm just the opposite. It was emulation that led me to purchase an N64. I just love the retro feel of it. In fact, I played WaveRace for an hour last night(that game is teh r0x0rs).

Anyway, if there is one game that is better played emulated, I would say Super Mario 64. Since the analog stick on my gamepad is more sensitve than an N64 controller's I get rock-awesome control. Running mario around with it just feels so smooth and responsive I couldn't imagine playing it any other way. The high-resolution graphics help alot for nailing tricky jumps, too. I never liked SM64 much until emulation.

funny how how u guys mention turbo mode and Secret of Mana 2. I've actually remapped "fastforward" key on ZNES so that's i can always press it on cue. For SoM2, pressing Y to bring up the sub menu take 3 full seconds each way (going in and out of it). Pressing fast forward to instantly get past spell animtaions (Here comes Ancient... again :corpse: ) and delays into and out of the menu make it SOO much more palpatible.
