Java 2 1.5 is the first version of java to be able to tap into hardware acceleration features, and as such, it does so with some problems.

Java Applets are the following
Azurues, Limewire, Web based chatrooms.... Adult webcam sites, RuneScape, and other applets, you will know if you have an applet loaded as the Sun Microsystems icon will appear at in the tool tray (a coffee cup usually)

some of the problems you may encounter include

1. you will recieve a warning saying that the D3D device is no longer present if you launch a rom while a java app is loaded

2. Certain other games and software will give a can't lock api error. this includes both opengl and directx games.

To work around this, you can either Close the Java Applet. (note that i had issues closing the LoZ roms even with it closed, after quick loading while in full screen.

OR

You can Uninstall Java 1.5, and download and install Java 2 1.6 Beta 2, which now uses a If Define function call for accessing the hardware. and will not do so unless the applet or program specifically asks for it.

(can a mod sticky this somewhere... i've seen this problem popping up everywhere lately)

To Jabo
i finally found out that it was Java 1.5 (even when closed strangely enough) that would prevent the LoZ games from closing properly. updating to 1.6, i no longer have this issue.
