Question Regarding the Use of the Xbox 360 USB conreoller..

My question is simply: Can you use the xbox 360 USB controller for PC with Project 64? If so, how? I was consider getting one, and a "yes" to this question would guarantee me getting it. Also, how responsive is it? Like if I were to press "A" would it take very long for the game to respond to that?

Thanks. And sorry for all the questions. I ended up asking more than I had anticipated. -_-

Yes, any controller Windows recognizes should be usable in Project64. (When you push 'A' electrons shoot through the controller to the PC at nearly the speed of light, which is fairly responsive. ;))

DON'T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN!!! :p Welcome to EmuTalk.

Personally I found it easier and cheaper to just snag a USB PC controller when I happened to be in a game store recently. I've heard good things about using a PS2 to USB converter (which I was planning on doing myself until I happened to spot my current controller) so I'd imagine one going from XBox to USB would work fine.

I have an Xbox 360 Controller for Windows myself, and I can tell you it's an amazing controller.

Pj64 fully supports it, of course, and it is as responsive as the real N64 controller was on the console itself.

Finally, you will find that the latest games have a very special support for this controller in concrete. For example, if you are playing Spiderman 3, you will see that all the controls have been automatically mapped to the same control scheme as the game on the Xbox 360 and, what is more, it even shows you the icons of the buttons on-screen as you play: what I mean is that in a tutorial where they teach you how to play, instead of telling you "press SPACE to jump" or things like that, it will say "press A to jump, B to punch, X to... etc" WITH THE PICTURE OF THE BUTTON on your controller. Just as if you were playing the game on the real 360.

I think that is a neat addition to games, and you will find that already a ton of them support this (rumble included).

As a plus, all the Games for Windows branded games like Bioshock, Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition, Halo 2, Shadowrun and many more fully support this controller. In Bioshock for example, when you choose the control options, you have one saying "switch to Xbox 360 controls", and the whole game will change everything for you, like for example, in loading screens it will show you a picture of the Xbox 360 controller with all the actions the buttons do (if you have the Xbox 360 controls turned off, the loading screen will just show a keyboard picture).

So definitely I recommend buying this controller. It's really comfortable and responsive, and it has great support on the latest games (of course old games support it too). Buy it if you can.

Wow, it has been a long time since I last posted here, huh?

What are some good brands? I don't want a crappy one..

I'd go with a 360 controller.

I fashioned an adapter for my regular xbox controller and it works beautifully. Since the regular xbox and the 360 controllers have a very similar layout and if anything the 360 feels better I would definitely recommend it. I also have friends that own and love them.

I use either my xbox 360 wired controller or a smart joy PS2 to USB converter. I much prefer the xbox 360 controller, but windows registers the two trigger buttons (I guess on a PS2 they'd be R2 and L2) as independent axises rather than actual buttons, which works good for PJ64 but on some emulators they won't let you use them for buttons (Yabause, for instance).

I've sampled quite a bit of controllers and none tickle my pickle like the Xbox 360 controller (not literally of course.... o_O). This controller is so comfortable and easy to use, not to mention lightweight! And the rumble on this is very responsive. Great controller indeed. I want to opt for a wireless one in the future but the wired one will do for now.

I wouldn't mind trying to use some plugins and programs to control my computer, emulators too, with my wiimote + nunchuck attachment. But most of the time I am using my wired 360 controller. There is a similiar product logitech makes with the look and feel of a 360, but with internal fans to help cool sweaty hands hehe. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2573083&CatId=141

If I hadn't already bought a wired controller a few months back I'd opt for this (since I don't actually own a 360 yet).

thats not entirely correct

with the default drivers.

1. Both triggers can't be pressed at the same time
2. Rumble doesn't work
3. it is hardly customisable.

i suggest using the XBCD drivers if its the wired drivers, and if its the wireless ones, you'll have to search down a special driver made by some japanese guy...

the XBCD drivers are Dinput only so games for windows won't won't have full support.

That itself is not entirely clear. The Xbox 360 controllers, the driver mainly, is not fully DirectInput compliant which bring up the issues of No Force Feedback support (DInput Feature), the triggers are linked to one Axis under DInput and nullifies the 2 when press together in DInput games, and the customization of the buttons/axises for DInput (and XInput enabled games) is limited to the game itself for changes.
