Those type of applications would be writing to the hard drive as you try to play, occasionaly causing slow downs on even higher end machines because it is either compressing the avi, or writing a massive file to the disk. Using an emulator and creating a movie file, then going and creating an avi from it usually weilds far better results because you are guaranteed to have a nice smooth avi when you are done, but we have use what is available to us...........mupen or screen capture apps
