PS3 Version progress?

Hey guys (Richard and co :p)

I saw a post here a while back on a power pc version of mupen you guys were working on and apparently you were close to getting it showing something.

Just wondering if you made any strides with it? I am aware that there is no 3D acceleration support in PS3 Linux at the moment so that doesn't help.

Thanks for your time :)

really?!?

I don't own a PS3, yet, but I think that comment may keep me waiting even longer now. I admit I was almost ready just to take the plunge (easier to learn if you own the product imo), but I think now I'll wait. :)

Yeah sony have restricted our Linux access a lot :( we only have access to roughly 208mb of ram out of a possible 512mb of ram. if we had the 512mb of ram access and 3d gpu access just imagine what emulation possibility's we could have on the ps3. It does have 4 cpu's running at 3.4ghz too  (afaik)

At one point I played around with compiling Mupen64 on the PS3 just to have a PPC-based (big endian) machine to test the build with. I haven't tried to make it actually run well on the PS3 - I've been focused on the 64-bit dynamic recompiler. Unfortunately even though the PS3 does have tremendous processing capability (one hyperthreaded PPC core and 6 available SIMD cores called SPEs), it has a relatively small amount of RAM and no direct graphics access. The display is pushed through a frame buffer and it's pretty slow. Without accelerated OpenGL there's no way that it will be able to reach real-time playing speed.

Out of interest, if Sony gave us access to the full 512mb of ram the PS3 has and full GPU access, could we see a playable version of Mupen on the PS3?

You will have to wait till these guys get the drivers working (I'm assuming it'll be mostly based on the open source "Nouveau" drivers).

looks like im not the only one thinking of mupen on ps3 :p

well, hackers just broke through to full 3d and ram acess of the ps3 a few months ago. i must warn u though that the procedure to do it is really messy and so not worth the trouble. however, i did find on kotaku that some are developing an alternative ps3 os with full ram and graphic acess. i'll see if i can find the article later.

i don't know if it's avalible to download. i really just used the few minutes i had for my break. tell me more info about this if u find any in my messages. thnx.

it's called the ps3 megabox homebrew project.

If someone develops OpenGL drivers for the PS3 which use the integrated GPU, then it would be possible to get Mupen64 running on it without too much trouble.
