Problems with pop-ups

Hello.

Lately I've been having many problems with the internet, especially with pop-ups that appear one time and another without stopping, and with programs that install themselves in my PC without me requesting them. I can't get rid of these programs, and there's a pop-up that is always appearing in my screen, even when I'm not connected to the net. Does any of you know how can I solve this trouble?

Thanks in advance.

try spybot (search for it on google, it's free). It will probably get rid of most of the spyware/adware you have. You may also want to scan your computer for viruses

It may be the messenger exploit if you're running an NT-based OS like XP. If so disable windows messaging. There's loads of tutorials on the net, it's a common problem.

Otherwise, if ad-aware or spybot don't do the trick, you've problably got an explorer hijack. You'll need to get HijackThis and manually remove the offending program from startup.

Thank you for the hints. Now I can work in my PC without those annoying pop-ups.

or you could just run a firewall and never have to worry about unrequested packets (messenger, worms...)

For web popups, I highly suggest a browser with a built in popup blocker, such as Netscape, Mozilla, and whatever the hell they're calling Firebird these days (all three are mozilla-based browsers).

Otherwise, afaik, the Windows Messenger can only popup stuff, not install anything and such.

Easy fix to all of your popup problems:

1. Open IE
2. Go to the menu item: tools/internet options
3. Click the connections tab, click on "lan settings..."
4. Check the box named "use a proxy server..."
5. Fill in the address box with: 127.0.0.1 and set the port to 1.
6. Install mozilla

This effectively cripples IE and serves multiple purposes. Even if you have any stray spyware that still throws any popups, and you can't get rid of it for some reason, it wont be able to access the net and send your activities to the marketing agencies, because it will always attempt to do so via internet explorer, which is now misconfigured, and the popups wont work either. Also, several misc programs out there that like to use IE for dumb purposes no longer can, for example, steam can no longer display ads when it is downloading from the content servers.

I'd like to recommend Firefox over the full vanilla bloatware.

Honestly why anyone uses anything else is a complete mystery to me. I loathe when a site asks me to use IE, and sometimes just skip whatever I was doing and go somewhere else, or get offline.

Seriously, PHUCK IE.

disabling the regular "windows messenger" problem is easy with win xp, just go control panel then administration, it's in there somewhere.

*sigh* I know my IE comment is flamebait, but I deeply mean it, both as a tech admin, and as a user.

Opera has also become a very good browser lately. Not that I've switched from Firefox, of course.

IE is like the ol' British Empire.

Sure, they conquered the world, but it doesn't mean that anybody liked them because of it.

Also one thing I forgot to mention, when you cripple IE with the method I described above, several trojans out there will quit working. The reason why, is because they use IE to communicate with your network, this way any firewall software that most people run wont notice anything (another reason I don't bother with firewalls or antivirus software,) much in the same way that most spyware works.

These are the side effects of having IE integrated into the kernel and running 24/7 with your computer. Theres really no way to block software that communicates like this, aside from filtering specific domain names, but that in itself has huge limits that go without saying.

I too had problems with pop-up windows, however I have solved this problemm, having established FireWall.
In general FireWall very useful program flexibly adjusted, also consumes not enough memory.
If there will be a desire, look for the program: ZoneAlarmPro.
Here the reference to a site of the developer: www.zonelabs.com
