What's new

Pirated copies of Windows OS to become too insecure to use.

For awhile at least, it sounds like you can still get updates, you just have to use Automatic Update to do it.

Either way, MS is forcing people to upgrade - iirc, they've stopped alot of support on pre-SP1 XP. I'm sure it'll be SP1 before long that they'll stop major support for as well.

passive, this check to see that your OS is not pirated will check to see that your system has been properly activated. If it has been activated by way of a patch or crack then it will not work, it has nothing to do with CD Keys.
Corporate version doesn't need to be activated, nor has it been cracked or modified, and yes, a coporate edition with a generated key passes ms's genuine advantage crap

Another thing, if you need to get ahold of individual patches, just go to a site that deals with unnattended winxp install discs, they will always have a list and download locations

Of course, with Corporate, which doesnt require activation, will the same checks be used?

Edit: reading passive above post. i am deemed useless, thatll teach me to miss page 2.

Indeed. Through xp corp and a "legit" product key, I have practically a whole legal system.
Anyway, about the updates... who needs them anyway? I have been running my computer like, several years without even having service pack 1 or 2 installed, yet I never got any attack that screwed it up. Hmmmm... besides, I don't use outlook.

I figure, Firefox, Mozilla's e-client (or some other, just not outlook) and a good firewall is pretty much all you need to keep the computer safe. Oh yeah, and some anti-spyware proggie too.

Nice try, ms ;) But I don't think it'll stop piracy anyway.

Any idea if there's a website that I can go to to purchase one of those student copies of Windows XP? Student copies are the cheapest I've ever found, like I ended up getting Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/etc for like 100 U.S.

Thank goodness for student editions :) Can't afford anything else!

Student editions are only available to STUDENTS. You have to get them through your university, usually at the bookstore. This is all done through the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Associate (MSDNAA) program which allows computer science students (and sometimes other students) to get software cheap. The basic idea is that if Microsoft give away their software to programming students, then it will make it that much easier for them to develop products for their OS and with their compilers in the future. Its actually one of the smarter ideas Microsoft has had, seeing as they are the market leader. When I was at Texas State, I got Windows XP and Visual Studio .Net for free, and Microsoft Office for $10. I don't know what you did to get Adobe Photoshop that cheap but this is only for Microsoft products.

I forgot about Firefox/Opera - and while I'm posting from them these days as well. D'oh. So those, spybot, zonealarm, and if anyone needs or gets any benefit from updates other than that, some good people like www.grc.com will soon do the same job anyway. I am interested in how they'll deal with corp since it's supposedly the most common pirate version and never needs activated. Perhaps they're only checking for activation that has been bypassed by unconventional means ("hacktivation"?), I've never really followed that stuff closely enough.
Then consider the fact that many of the people who would have had the technical know-how and desire to go out and get XP corp probably know how to keep virus free and use a firewall, and stay away from doing stupid things with outlook... well I can't see those pesky pirates caring too much anyway then.

Which is more likely; would the average XP corp pirate go "ooh! A `private` email has found its way into my inbox! Gee I better read it! And what is that??`britney spears nude home jpg.vbs.exe` man I gotta see that..." or "Oh look, spam. Good thing I don't run HTML email previews. *delete*"

Microsoft announces crackdown - No security updates for pirate copies!

Pirates/semi-intelligent users counter-announce general lack of care about updates!

If you read between the lines, it seems Mircrosoft started this now for the reason the want to sell to the Chinese Market. The chinese Market, having poor copy right laws and the will to dublicate and sell anything as their own, is the main reason Microsoft is starting this program. I believe the material I read said that around 98% of the PC's that use Windows in the China Market place has a pirated copy. Most likely bought on the street.

For the rest of the world that does not see open market pirated material sold on the street, this is not a hassle for Microsoft, because they can do what the movie and music industry is doing and go after isp providers for address' of illegal downloaders.

As for myself, I neither deny nor confirmed the orgins of materials that find their way onto my machine, and if caught on suspision. I say "It's a virus!!!!"

They are almost all illegal because in 3rd world countries the price they ask is too damn high, here in Brazil a Sempron based comp is assembled in about R$ 1500,00 and windows XP costs us R$ 400,00, it is a rip off!
Please do not insult a country for being poor.

Could be that Adobe has something similar set up for their products for students.

A department head at a community college here told me today that you can get a student license for AutoCAD for about $160 a year. Alot better than the $6000/year the school is paying for 18 computers for classes. :)

Isn’t this ironic?

Microsoft’s makes Operating Systems with countless security holes, and now this turns out to be an advantage for them. It’d almost suggest they’ll keep on leaving some major security holes in future versions of their OS cough*Long-Horn*cough just so they can later release a very urgent fix (so pirate users will have such a need for that fix that they will be willing to pay for the fix or suffer the consequences).

In my opinion SOME of M$ fixes ARE necessary even if u have the most up to date antivirus and/or other best Malware blocking software. Even the best antivirus software suggests you should apply M$ patches.

M$ is one of the most successful companies in history, they have made so much money already I can’t imagine what they’d be worth if every single pirate on this planet registered their M$’s software.

Anyway, I bet M$ will also find a way to block Windows XP Corporate too.

I do feel this might be a dangerous move for Microsoft too if they’d decide to stop giving fixes to pirates in ALL ways. Cuz with time people might want to change to other free OS like Linux.
Like Brazil that recently decided to switch to Linux due to the high costs of Windows. And this made Bill Gates himself go to Brazil to negotiate with president Loula.

So If you pirates of the world disagree with this decision Microsoft has taken;
YOU HAVE THE POWER!!!
Unite and stop using ANY version of Windows® and switch to some other non Microsoft OS like LINUX. This might probably make Gate$ shiver. Because it’s also thanks to pirates that windows is the most used OS in the world.
After a decade, Windows would no longer be the number one OS and Microsoft would have lost Million$ and every software developer would focus on the new No. 1 OS.
Of course the above deserves a big :D and also a :linux:

No, it makes perfect sense because using "M$" wasn't funny ten years ago when the Internet was still young, and it's definitely not funny now either.

I agree - it makes you look like some stupid zealot "fight the opre$$orZ" freak. If you don't like Microsoft, fine; don't use their stuff. Saying crap like this only makes you look stupid, not them.

Dudes why so much aggressiveness? I’m not really an anti-Microsoft or Pro-Linuxer.
Didn’t u notice the part where I said:
"Of course the above deserves a big :D and also a :linux:"?
It means I was just joking around!

I was just kidding with the “You have the power” shit. I thought it was easy to realize by the stupidness. :)
And I didn’t use M$ because I feel very funny or some shit, Most people just use that as an abbreviation for Microsoft today, just like a guy said. It’s just an abbreviation, It’s just a fucking abbreviation for god’s sake.
