Eagle: the determination on whether or not someone has a pirated copy is based on a blacklist of cd keys, a properly generated cdkey does not have this problem, but that said, there are a lot of morons using blacklisted keys and they will cause a shit storm of virus infections.

I use a pirated copy of WinXP, with SP2 installed :p My key isn't on the black list, so nothing for worrying about for me

passive, this check to see that your OS is not pirated will check to see that your system has been properly activated. If it has been activated by way of a patch or crack then it will not work, it has nothing to do with CD Keys.

vamp, that comic didn't make much sense the first dozen times you posted it and it doesn't make much sense now.

I am screwed!
But for real, the cost of WinXp here in brazil goes to 1 and a half minimum wage, it is virtually unbuyable and i know no home user here who bought it unless bundled.
Oh! And we will be in for some Uber virus that will require a update that only a
registered user will be able to dload! Just wait some months.

No, it makes perfect sense because using "M$" wasn't funny ten years ago when the Internet was still young, and it's definitely not funny now either.

$10? you got ripped off, my college gave me XP Pro for free with my own key :p
Same here, so I let mom use that one. I bought an MSDN set and use that with with some "minor modifications" :naughty: - because activation sucks.

While I understand they are under no obligation to help the people who haven't purchased their product(s), it would be nice on the global scale to help keep down the exploits running around the 'net that suck up bandwidth and whatnot... oh well.

Who said it was meant to be funny. Its like an abbreviation now, no different than LOL or WTF. After all, if I just said MS I could mean multiple sclerosis :p

I forsee in the future MS saying "opps, we messed up, how do we fix this now" when their bright idea turns out to be not so bright.

Just the idea that pirates would switch to a legit version of windows to get security patches is absurd.

all that will happen is that pirates will crack the patches then put them on emule or irc for others to download.

I think what they are planning is for you to have to verify you own Windows before downloading the patch at all. Probably some sort of web application to scan your computer to make sure its legit.

Maybe Microsoft are just saying, why the fuck are we paying bandwith to allow people to download patches for an operating system they haven't paid us for. They probably know it'll be cracked, but doesn't matter - saves them a bit of cash :D

Solution; Any half-decent free antivirus/antispyware software such as spybot, and the lovely free Zonealarm as a firewall. Very few things would last long if you keep up to date, and even if they did, they can never hit the 'net if you have the brains to block them. It'll be the same situation we're already in only people using pirate copies of Windows will replace the idiots who don't have such software. Get all the updates you like at the moment, and if you infect yourself with a virus chances are they won't stop it running anyway so this really won't change much. Sounds like Microsoft protecting it's revenue stream due to the Longhorn delays.
Next thing they'll be making us have our XBox scanned by every non-Live game to see what is on it before we can play. ;)

They have an alternative to that they could use now. Bittorrent I believe it's called. ;)

No, that wouldn't be a good idea personally - too many people would just pick the torrents up from any old site. Also why should they even do any initial seeding for people who haven't paid for their copy of XP? ;)
