Nintendo "to go Sega-like"?

pretty much saying they intend to not make any new hardware (let alone think about it) for at least 8 years (as Miyamoto mentioned in an earlier interview)

this statement basically keeps the company flexible for the future depending upon what they do.

why state something so early before the gamecube has really had chance to proove itself, and with the gba doin so well? if they wanna be felixble they could keep schtum and not say a thing... heh

This has been taken WAY out of context. Nintendo said that they believe that the current hardware is almost as good as you need to make the games they want to make. They think that the life of a console will increase a few years because of this. It pretty much means they are going to spend most of their money developing better games instead of better hardware.

i dont think that will last.. eventually they wont be able to afford to make consoles due to the fact they will have to keep cutting cost to competewith newer machines and still stay attractive

its sort of like the ps2, ok hardware, but quit a lot of classic games on it that ppl love. even though it has good games, sony is still looking toward the ps3 and probably crappy sequels to those classics :p

regardless, a machine evern 3-4 yrs old isnt near as attractive as a new system depending in manufacturer and/or features and "up to date features" it will have.

Well, I kinda have to agree tho. What do we want next? Everything is looking so good already. More high-polygon pushing machines? So developers need more time to code all them damn polys?

Or do we want photo-realistic games that look like a movie? I for one wouldn't, and I think the GC is capable of pushing the limit between gaming/movies.

i'm sure many of us don't want games to just be like they are now.. i'm one of them.. but i'm also sure Sony for example won't care.. they'll probably push the PS3 and try to make movie looking games become a normal thing.. and i bet in the end Nintendo will end up there too eventually.. but i fear that we will hit a "limit" someday.. i'm sure some day we'll have home machines so incredible that it would be stupid to even upgrade them.. i'm not sure how far in the future it is but i dare say less than 8 years.. i imagine Nintendo will be a website instead of a console.. and you might be able to download the games you wanna play from them into your superfuturistichomepc.. and play any games you like thru them and maybe Nintendo won't even have consoles anymore..

heres the thing. things only are as good as our imagination lets them be. lets say that we have games that look as real as human life. yah people will THINK that that's the end of it but then someone will say "lets do more" eliminate the controler. eliminate the game pad.
So then we will have these bodysuits that we put on with censors in them that make the charactors in the game do what we do. of course there will still be the problem of doing a backflip (Link) or swimming so these functions will be controled by pressing your thumb to another finger.
Then someone will say "there is STILL more we can do with this" and they will eliminate the body suit and create a sensor that allows you to do the same thing as the body suit but with only little reflectors on you that are picked up by the sensor. then we will get into games like in the movie "Exsistenze" where TRUE gamers have pods that attach to their nervous system and play the ULTIMATE rpg that is just like real life. then someone will build on that and someone else on that and someone else on THAT.
when pac man first came out people were thinking that that was the be all and end all of games. then Nintendo came out and people were SURE that they were seeing something spectacular. then came Snes and we all crapped our pants becasue mario looked like he never did before. then came the 64 and people once again soiled their pants with the joy to see mario do back flips and fly through HUGE lands and when they saw Link they had giant orgasms. then came the cube and the release of body fluids began again.
As long as technology improves so will games. not only the way they look but the way they are played.

Dude, you have some great points there, but for the love of god, use paragraphs. I dunno about other people, but I can`t read that way.

So, if N decide to pull out of hardware.. that means we'll have to own a M$ or Sony console? :p

If it would happen (which I don't think), they would probably "let the GameCube stay in business" and continue to develop for it (instead of developing to other companies consoles).

I think that just Nintendo feels that the Cube will last a long time with good games (and maybe expansions).
It's better for the public that there would be only one console for a long time.

I agree with them (Nintendo). Every now and then, the gaming companies create new consoles, each one better in graphics, music, etc. But the one who should feel disapointed in creating new hardware is the player. We always have to buy new consoles, wich will stop having new things when they reach a limit, so what every company should do is create more games and stop thinking of new hardware. (I hope you understand what I mean)

but there IS no limit. that's the thing. what would we be doing right now if they had stoped at 8-bit. soon FPS's will be WAY more realistic where you can see the edge of your glasses and the tip of your nose if you look down. there will be blinking. you'll see the hair hanging in your eyes (if you have any left) then there will be game parks with huge rooms that load the game and you play IN REAL LIFE. imagine jumping on a Gumba with your own two feet. or going down a pipe to a warp zone. If it can be imagined it can be done.

i dont think "realistic" is the concept.. games (for the most part) are a fantasy and something to do in your spare time to not remind of you of the hassles of everyday life.

i also think one reason for nintendo making a statement like that, is to allow for full integration of the tri-force board and its time to mesh with the gamecube and get all that stuff worked out.
