Try lower resolutions, diable Anti-Aliasing and AAF, and see if its better.
Many Games need a faster PC ( Super Mario 64 was one of the first games on N64, the later games need more ressources to emulate.)
If you have the Ati Control Panel installed go there and put everything i listed on "performance".
If not go into display settings in the control panel and do it there (if you have installed the Ati-Drivers and not the Windows-Drivers...)
If the Windows-Drivers are installed, go to ATI.COM and download the latest Catalyst Driver Suite.

My computer is high spec (ish), and i'm still reduced to running it at around 800x600 fullscreen with anti alias and other stuff Off.

How many programs are you running in the background? You've only got 512mb of RAM, like I did once, and I had to shut down some programs that were running in order to get full speed out of most games.

And what are your settings set to under the "options --> configure graphics plugin"? What are you using for a sound plugin?

I have a P4 2,4 with an Radeon 9600 and have normally no problems with games, even with stuff like Filtering enabled, but some games need just more resources, so for some games i lower the resolution and use lower quality settings for fullspeed.
If someone have so many problems with the framerates, there must (with recent hardware...) be a problem. (Wrong/old/buggy drivers, background processes...)
