My computer's fan has gone into hyperdrive!

Recently my computer's fan has gone into hyperdrive on startup! I observed my hardrive (22) and video card's temperature (41) - it was 10 degrees lower than normal!

After 5 mins my hardrive and video card's temperature returns back to normal and the fan's noise also returns to normal. And it's not the noise of the disc drive starting up - I don't have any discs in my disc drive. It's definately my fan. So what is the cause of this? Is it dust? Climate change? It's now winter and the temperature in my room is alot cooler. It may be a coincidence but it happened after I installed some MS auto updates.

Whatever the case, this has not happened to me before, not that I'm aware of anyway.

the machine is always colder when its turned on, this is also the time where the fans are under the most stress because they have to battle with dust to get going when you've had a machine for a while.

If theres a lot of dust you'll notice the fans are VERY loud with grinding/car engine like noises - only thing you can do is wait till the fans have reached a fast enough speed so they stop making that horrible noise or get some compressed air and blast the crud out of the fans.

That noise usually is because of lubrication and/or thermal issues.

My video card fans are noisy when first turned on with my PC being ducted to outside air.

It's possible to hush them for good by taking out the fan, pulling up the sticker on the back or front on some and put a drop of engine oil! Yes, I said engine oil!

Um, i dont know about the engine oil part... I think i can put up with my fan been a little noisy for five mins when it starts up.

Incidently, I tried Speed Fan but i keep getting this priveledged error when i first open it up. Second time it opens OK but this error pissed me off so much i uninstalled it. I got the latest build.

Anyway i don't know if its worth the trouble cos my fan goes back to normal after 5 mins. I'm kinda used to it by now.

well, although it may cause the fan excess stress, it is kinda ensuring that your system has a longer lifespan. Just make sure you dont let your fan die. Then you'll be seeing your temperatures skyrocket!
